Looking for some suggestions for dog insurance. Looking for one that includes cover for vet fees. My petplan renewal has come through and it is double last years amount. My dog is 15 months old, a collie x who is fit and healthy with no claims to date.

I've been with Tesco for 7 years, have had several claims with them including one large, complicated claim that included 3 bills from 3 vets, they were brilliant every time and I've never had to wait longer than 10 days from start of claim to them paying out. At the start of the cover my premiums were £20 a month, they're now £27 a month but I've claimed around £5k from them over the years. They don't pay out per condition either - I get £7000 vets fees per year for whatever I need them for, so they would pay out twice for the same problem (broken leg etc) as long as it didn't go over my yearly 'allowance'.

I had v bad service from tesco. Had to wait 6 weeks for claim to b settled when lily had GDV, 3 weeks for Maya's toe amputation. Both dogs veterans so now premiums are £125 per month. Puppy is insured with vets medi cover, very similar to pet plan and £24 per month

I would phone them to ask why it has doubled. Fair enough a little price rise but doubling! Sometimes if you phone to complain they may be able to tweak it for you!

Ive used and claimed with no problems John Lewis, the middle policy is for up to £7.5k pa for life. I claimed when we lost out dog with no vet evidence and a month after it happened (I didn't even think about claiming until we were looking for a puppy) they back paid the month I'd still been paying them (again I didn't think about that) and paid out her purchase price quickly. They also paid straight to the vet for other vets fees earlier in the year. For a spaniel I was paying between £15 and £20 a month. Friend pays a bit more for a retriever

With regards to tescos a few years ago my friend used them. Her dog had a bad slipped disc whilst with me (he was paralysed) After an initial frantic day where I had to get hold of her (on holiday) to get then to speak to me. They were good. He went to leahurst for 2 weeks and tescos paid straight to them about £3k

I would def phone Petplan and query that increase. I know it goes up when they reach a certain age but not 15 months. If you have had no claims and the cover is at the same level I cant see why they would double it! Just be careful with some of the cheaper ones, you do tend to get the service you pay for!

I agree with others, ring them! Maybe do a price comparison first because they will often try and match rather than lose your business.
I would recommend a lifetime policy rather than a yearly one though because if you have to claim that condition will be excluded for any future insurance. We use Morethan for all of ours, trouble is if you have lifetime you are tied in but we've had pretty good service from them, can be a bit slow paying out and we've had to argue a couple of times but got there in the end!

I got my husky x lab covered for life with petplan at £25 a month, at just over a year old I received a letter from petplan to let me know it's all still the same price and same coverage. I wonder if its because I he's 'covered for life' as I think it's slightly more expensive then the yearly? Although for me, £25 is cheap! Especially considering how important it could be if something dreadful happened. I'd give them a bell and let them know you might be changing, like most insurance companies they want your custom and will probably drop it down.

Remember if you change company now anything noted on your pets records will not be covered as classed as pre-existing.

I would also talk to your vet as there are lots of companies they may not consider doing a direct claim with due to long pay out times and not easy to deal with, Tesco would be one of those along with E&L for our practice. We would happily deal with Pet plan. Just something to consider incase you haven't got money up front

Agree with the others too, call petplan and query it. Whichever you chose, ensure its cover for like, its worth every penny
