my GSD pup comes with some weeks insurance (poss 6) with the kennel club so the breeder tells me. I haven't seen the documentation for this yet but, putting it bluntly, is this worthwhile and sufficient or should I get on and insure the pup on my own policy from the start?

My pup was insured for 4 weeks when I bought her with Pet Plan. It was pretty comprehensive. I took out insurance with the KC once the pet plan one expired.

I think I started our puppy's PetPlan insurance (he came with 4 weeks of Kennel Club, so exact opposite situation to you amymay) before the one he came with ran out. I've got a feeling you can't claim within the first week or so of a policy, and also I put him onto lifetime - so in the very unlikely event that he started to show a chronic condition within weeks of arriving (he didn't) I wanted him to be on the lifetime policy ASAP.

thanks. Hadn't thought of the point you make in your final sentence

When I registered my litter with KC, they offer you 5 weeks free insurance to pass on to the puppy’s new owners, I assume this is what you have? It is through Agria who are a very good reputable company used by both KC and BASC however they’re not the most competitive. I would make use of the free insurance and then ask them for a quote to compare to Petplan, they weren’t competitive enough for me. It is a decent policy and covers you from the moment you pick your pup up.
