Just spoken to my very upset friend who had to have her horse PTS on saturday.

He was on long term loan and the owner made the decision, to have the hunt take him.

Friend had the insurance in her name, has called insurance company today and has been told that she isnt covered because the hunt took him and he wasnt PTS by a vet.

Horse has been treated for past 3 months for kissing spine, and the vet was the one who advised them to call it a day as there wasnt much hope of the situation improving and dispite treatment and manipulation he was in a lot of pain.

Im not very experienced in this sort of thing and obviously havent seen her policy. she said shes too upset to fight it, so has sort of given up.

So my question is, is this normal? (I dont think its very fair!!)

FYI insurance company was e&i

Any thoughts? experiences?

Not been in this situation myself, but maybe its worth getting a letter from vet who recommend the PTS on humane grounds....it may be that the insurers permission should have been sought before the event, and as I understand it they will often only pay out if it meets BEVA guidelines or something, but I would have thought it makes no difference whether the hunt or vet did it tbh.

my thoughts exactly, I dont see what the difference was. I had thought she spoke to them before hand, so I couldnt understand it either. am seeing her tonight so will get more info.

and yes I do meant E&L

unless the policy had loss of use in it (which usually pays about70% of current market value if the horse is put down, i would imagine that the insurance company would not pay out anyway, as kissing spine is not life threatning, can be treated by operation (expensive and lont time recovering). said insurance company will wriggle out of paying for anything if it can.
