Is my insurance company trying to put off paying me? Horse has arthritic changes in his hock, new issue, nothing previous with his hock. The vet report was duly sent, vet saying it's straightforward it big intake of breath when he saw which company I used. (Not E&L!)

I originally when applying for the policy sent them his five stage which recorded a tiny sarcoid, they sent me back the policy excluding any treatment for sarcoids and mudfever as he has it very badly once and needed antibiotics. Today I've had a letter saying they will be excluding sarcoids and parasitical infection (wtf, no record of that on his vet report!!) or I can cancel my policy. No mention of paying for the hock issue except that if I choose to cancel my policy, they won't pay for the hock problem. obviously, I'll phone them on Monday but his original policy excludes the sarcoid (modular lump). Confused!

As an aside, think I'll be changing companies come renewal time. :(

It sure sounds like they're trying to give you the cold shoulder. I don't have insurance like you so any medical ailments my horses have are paid for out of my pocket (and you might be surprised at how much less the vet bills are when there's no insurance involved!). I was just looking at my business expenses for last year a couple of days ago and was impressed at how small the vet fees were for all of mine. I'm sure you know but bear in mind if you change insurers that they will probably exclude the hock also. I can't see how your insurance company can wiggle out of this as it's a new problem for the horse but they will try I'm sure!

I think there is some debate that mud fever can in some cases be caused by bacteria in the gound, certainly I've known horses that have never had it move onto a yard and pick it up within weeks (no other change of management) and vice verca. Maybe the person filling the form out (who may not be horsey at all) got confused between mud fever and paracites? Hopefully a quick call on monday will sort it out

I claimed for my boys hock when he was first diagnosed with arthritic changes - insurance paid out the £1000 bill without question and he had exclusions for mud fever as he had it so bad he needed antibiotics and an over reach injury he got the same year - neither or which I claimed for and both of which were simply notified to the insurance company.

I cant see how they could possible not pay out of this one

The vet report mentions chorioptes, which is mange. The horse has never had mange or treatment for mange: he's had Dectomax injections because he was itchy with his daft feathers and being on straw. A different vet from the practise dealt with this. I need to get this removed. They've also noted his DOB wrongly, just like the other insurance company did! Grr!

First when does policy expire?
Not entriely sure but my understanding is ... If you claim before policy expires and they agree claim - they have to pay out on that claim for next 12 months even if u don't renew

March, so a bit of time to work on the issue. I've thought about using another company, but as OH points out, we've kept the same people for our older dog as the prices quoted for him from other companies are crazy because he has had some minor health issues, lots of stupid accidents from running through cover.
