Apologies in advance for naive question but I am still new to all this horsey stuff. Horse was at vets yesterday for hind leg lameness investigations. No definitive answers as vet said lameness would vary during assessment and at times he barely looked lame at all. Horse was quite guarded on his back and xrays confirmed kissing spine. Vet explained this may or may not be causing his lameness. He has had steroids in his back and will be reviewed in 2 to 3 weeks but traditional kissing spine surgery may be needed. Vet advised i open claim now. Bill so far is <£500 If I open claim now will they just pay for this treatment or, If surgery/further investigation is required will this be included in this claim? My concern is they pay only for yesterday's bill but if in 3 months we decide surgery is only option will that not be included? I'm aware his back will no doubt be excluded on renewal regardless.

You must open the claim now otherwise they may refuse to pay for further treatment later on, you have 12 months to treat the issue and get it paid for by the insurance co so the clock will be running even if you pay for this part yourself.

Get on to them first thing as they need to be in the loop as soon as possible.

Open the claim now and it will save you any future difficulties. When my mare was diagnosed with KS and bone spavin, NFU were brilliant. Good luck!

The claim will remain open for 12 months from the time of opening it so any treatment during this time should be covered. There is no benefit from not opening a claim now as you will be required to notify the insurers whether you choose to claim for the <£500 treatment or not. If you don't this will still appear on your horse's veterinary history and you run the risk of the insurers rejecting any future claim due to not disclosing previous treatment.
