Hello,

I might be buying my first horse a little bit sooner than I expected (was planning in buying in a year's time) and even though I know quite a lot about the cost of owning a horse I would like some recommendation regarding insurance. I am planning of registering my husband and I for the BHS Gold Membership (for the rider insurance and public liability insurance?).

Obviously I would need some insurance for vet bills.

Could you give me an idea of price (per month) and which insurance company you would recommend?
The horse I am looking at buying is 8 years old.
He will have a 5 stage vetting done before buying him.

Is the price different is the horse lives out most of the time?

thank you !!

It all depends on what you use horse for and how much you insure it for. I would say roughly around £40-£50 a month. If a horses value is over a certain amount, most insurers will require a 5 stage vetting certificate. I am with SEIS & rate them highly. Dont be tempted by extra low premiums from the likes of E&L....their cheap premiums reflect the quality of service!! I dont think I have never been asked by an insurance company if my horse is stabled or not.

thank you !
I'm more worried vet bills than anything else. In this market he is worth around £2000-£3000 so not a very expensive horse. I would do a bit of everything :hacking, schooling, jumping (but not very high !) and would also like to do some endurance riding (he is not the best type for this but maybe just the 20 miles ride).
I definitely will be careful in which insurance company I will use and I will have a 5 stage vetting done even though he is not an expensive horse.
