Hello all.
I've been looking into insuring Henry, but was unsure as to whether I could due to his current state. I only really want a basic policy and my vet said it shouldn't be a problem, there's nothing physically wrong with him aside from his weight, which is obviously being dealt with.
As for value; do I value him at what he's currently worth, in his state of condition, or what he will be worth in a few months when his weight is what it should be?
If I should insure him for what he's worth up to weight I as thinking somewhere between £600 and £800, for an 18 year old TB gelding, do you agree with this? Going on what I've already managed to find out from a previous owner, he's a good allrounder, good to do in every way and 18 months ago was out hunting and jumping at weekends. I don't think his value should be any lower, but I know his age is against him, so would you say with him up to weight etc somewhere around the £600-£800 mark is a fair value?
Also, I know his age is against us with insurance as some companies won't insure him, can anyone recommend a company that insures the older horse? I didn't bother with insurance for my old mare, I was put off by the external injury only and nearly everything being excluded, though it may have been that specific policy, so I just put the money away each month. I really want him insured though, as I want public liability with him being at home, my old lady was covered on the yards policy, another reason I didn't bother with her policy. Bless her she went several years accumuating her "savings" and never needed a vet, aside from routine visits. When I lost her in her thirties she'd accumulated a hefty sum. It's her money that bought Henry and paid for all of his treatments.....
So any input greatly appreciated
