Ive had my horse 10 years, and I am currently in the process of making my first insurance claim. This is due to the fact that he has been reasonably healthy the whole time I've had him, and any treatment he has had for any mild laminitis or mites has cost less than my excess so I never bothered to claim for it. Now, though, my insurance company want records of EVERY veterinary treatment my horse has had since I have owned him...! This seems a bit ridiculous to me?! I can obviously just ask my vets to forward on any records (I've only used two vets) but it all seems a bit like they are trying to find reasons to get out of paying for his current treatment, which shouldn't come as much of a surprise really... I just feel a bit cheesed off that I've paid £55 a month to them for the past 10 years and they are making so much fuss about an £800 claim. And to top it all off, my boy is now 17 so no doubt they will be cancelling my vets fees cover in a couple of years anyway! I know hindsight is a wonderful thing but I really wish I'd just put the £55 a month into a savings account and paid for his fees as and when :(.
Sorry for the rant! Probably should have told this to my insurance companies customer service department rather than you lovely lot.

Totally 100% standard practise. They are not trying to find reasons to not pay out, they always ask.

You are actually meant to inform your insurance company of any non routine vet visit you have had throughout the year, whether you claim you not. Even if you don't claim for an ailment they can exclude it the next year.

You just ask your vet practise for a vet history printout. They do it all the time.

Which company is it? Have you had any allergy troubles in the past?

If it's standard practice then I can't really complain, just seems like a lot of fuss and hassle! He's with Petplan, who on past experience (with our dog) I can't fault. As far as I can recall the only times I've had the vet out before were for mites, a few bouts of laminitis, vaccinations, and once when he had a grass seed in his ear. I will ask my vets for a print off of his records and hopefully that will satisfy them!

yep agree with the other its standard practice

so many people think that if you don't claim for something that it doesn't cound. sorry but whether you claim or not you are only covered for that ailment/injury for a year from when it first occurred, again standard with all companies

Agree with all above... My mare is lame behind and we had to send off all her previous notes which showed injuries to the hind legs years ago which weren't claimed for. They just need it for their records. :D

I will ask my vets for his records tomorrow! I can't imagine it will be a problem, my horse is currently being treated for lameness in front (still undiagnosed :( ) and he hasn't received any treatment on his legs in the last 10 years so we should be fine! I just can't understand why they didn't ask for that at the start of my claim (they've asked for lots of other "additional" information!), or indeed why they don't ask when you renew your policy each year? Oh well, I suppose its just the way things are done! I won't spend any more time worrying about it... Thank you for all your replies, I was a bit worried about it before!
