Can anyone advise on their experience with either Animal Friends or Insurance Emporium?

NFU won't quote for my new horse after the loss of my last one so now unsure who to go with!

I have been with Animal Friends for a few years now and they have been fine. Paid out without a problem but it wasn’t for anything major. I have however, just this morning, moved to Insurance Emporium as I got my renewal through and the price has gone up massively with AF despite not claiming within the last year.

Insurance Emporium were fine for my daughter’s gelding - the premiums weren’t too bad and when he had a year where we had the vets on speed dial, they paid out >£10,000 for multiple claims. He’s now on catastrophe cover (and is retired as a result of hellish year) as there’s not much of him which wasn’t excluded. Because we’d had a good experience with them with him we insured my daughter’s new horse with them too. The premiums have been eye watering and gone up a lot despite not having claimed. New horse has also had a hellish year but they only paid ~£500 of a £5000 claim but have now excluded virtually every body part too. The 17% co-pay (new this year I think) is quite painful too. Over the two horses, taking into account premiums paid and claims reimbursed we are just about breaking even but second horse will also be going onto catastrophe cover at renewal time.

Edited to add that NFU wouldn’t quote for second horse because we’d made a claim for the first horse - even though it was a different horse, different insurers and accidental injury 🤷‍♀️

Interesting as I lost my horse last year and in March I asked them to quote for possible new pony and they did. In the end pony was not suitable but it did give me an idea of what I would need to pay.

I strongly suspect it's because I had multiple vet claims for my boy within 18 months - they paid out approx £13k before I lost him to kidney failure!
