 Just had my insurance renewal through from More Than and its gone up by £6 a month! Its nearly the same price as my horse insurance!

I currently have cover to £7000 max for life for each condition. Is this worthwhile or would the 12 month limit be ok? My quote for a 5 year old border terrier is £23.09 per month. Is that expensive or the going rate? Excess is £70 then 10% of remaining cost of bill.

Who do you all insure with and who is of reasonable price and good for cover and paying out?

Im a vet nurse , provided that you havent had mots of claims in previous year(s) i dont think thats too bad. I have a boxer just turned 8, granted over the years had lots of treatment and it has been steadily climbing. Got my renewal yday... gone up £10 per month as he is now over 8!!!!! It will be around 47 per month can you believe.... i cannot afford to carry it on. Would rather not say who with but company with a good reputation for small animal cover.
One thing i would say is I would always opt for lifetime or cover for life policy versus a 12 month policy (time limited) or max benefit..... trust me I do all the claims at work !
Im considering taking out a new policy so all my dog previous wont be covered but anything new like cancers , diabetes etc anything new would be . I can get something more specific for that around the 20 a month price. Good luck x

just to add to that actualyy... have to be careful about giving advice as I am not FSA authorised blah blah blah.... BUT if i were to look again More than would be a company I would get a quote from , and for the level of cover you have..... Ill say no more :-)

For lifetime insurance that price doesn't seem too horrific but the excess of 10% might concern me...that could really add up if you had to pay for a 3 or 4k op for instance.

While we as horse owners are used to only having 12 month cover and it would cover accidents and one off injuries the risk is that dogs/cats do seem to get more lifelomg conditions - diabetes, thyroid etc - that you wouldn't be able to keep claiming for. Plus it is very difficult to get any cover once they hit 8 or 10 years old as that is usually the age limit for a new policy.

For lifetime policies - vets love PetPlan (they pay very quickly) but they are dear
Axa gets very good reports as do NFU - not sure if NFU still do dog insurance or if you need to have another policy with them to get it. Greenbee (J Lewis) are also well spoken off.

All the rest are pretty much the same as each other as far as I can tell - just read very carefully to make sure that you understand exactly what is and isn't included! And of course there is the name we aren't allowed to say  but avoid and bargepole come to mind, lets just say that if you wouldn't insure your horse with them don't insure your dog with them for the same reasons...

I do kind of agree... most vets will promote PP and they usually pay promptly and in most cases this cash is coming back to us the customer not the vet so that very important.
I also feel that also perhaps PP is one of the few companys that pay without dragging out endless historys, quibbling etc etc... just my experiance tho.. thers always exceptions to every rule lol. Guess its back to the getting waht you pay fopr scenario... means Im gonna be even poorer to have peace of mind!

Thanks for all the helpful replies. Some good tips and info there! It seems my cost isn't that bad a deal then! Although I do have my car and house with Axa I hadn't realised they do pet cover too so going to get a quote from them before deciding to stay with More Than. :)

My friend is with More Than and has had nothing but problems with them making claims.....

I would have thought £20/month is about right for that level of cover? Wish my horse insurance was that cheap!! ha ha

Whey hey!! Just got quote from Axa and its £15.88 a month with better cover and continuious cover rather than 12 month limit. Fixed excess at £75 so taken cover out and cancelled More Than!

Thank you all! :D

Well done you!

Just remember that anything (anything at all) that your dog has seen the vet for will now be excluded by AXA...

Thankyou for a very timely thread!!

My insurance renewal for a 5 year old lab was £426.00 increased from last years premium of £244!!!!

I've had no claims, no change or circumstances or anything else so thought the increase was beyond a joke.

Thanks to this thread I've just had a quote from Axa (for the same cover £7000 vets and continous cover) for £280......I am now a very happy bunny!!!

So pleased others are making savings too!

My dog has only had a skin allergy and its management that keeps it at bay rather than vets that treat it so will be fine for changing my cover to Axa. I've not claimed for anything that will need any further treatment. :D

Axa now cover my car, house, contents and dog!! Just wish they did horse insurance too!! In fact my car insurance went down this year when it came to my renewal! Nice one :D:D

NFU still do dog insurance, its a reasonable price for policy 4k per condition per year, i'd prefer higher £ vet cover but can't afford premiums for those. When i added new doglet to the policy recently she came out more expensive despite being younger & same breed as current dog so expect his policy will get a hike come renewal. I can't remember the reason NFU gave now but was basically to do with insurance costs in industry going up as a whole, which seemed plausible given that its only gradually risen by a few pounds per month over the past 3yrs and our other types of insurance has risen.

Mine went up between £3-£5 this year for each of the 2 dogs and cat (all on life cover), each time i had a renewal letter I phoned up Pet Plan, and they gave me a discount only small but reduced things a bit to £2-£4 increase. I have to say i really rate pet plan - always a pleasure to deal with and were fantastic with the treatment/claim for my old mare, moreover when i decided to have her pts, and phoned them they were incredibly sensitive and understanding!

Always always phone up whenever you geta renewal letter - they always put a renewal price higher than if you phone them and say you'd like a revised quote.

Just had my NFU Renewal through for three dogs, gone up from £745 to £1548. Must admit to having claimed for two of them in the last twelve months, but only vet bills amounting to a maximum of £400. They also want a loaded excess on each one now, of at least double the normal amount, can't really afford to keep it up now. Beginning to think they do not want to insure animals anymore.
