Ours is fine monthly.
Is that with the vet or nurse doing it?
I think the first two the vet did, which included a consult fee, now the nurse does it with no consult fee.

I did once insure a new horse for a year, but gave up after the renewal had several exclusions.
Apart from that, I've never insured any animal, horse or otherwise, which in hindsight has been the right decision. The money I've saved from not paying for horse and small animals over the last few decades has been significant.

Hmm, I had my dog insured for the 1st year - he had meningitis which was covered. I didn't renew as it seemed very expensive but then he had to have an op for a very rare condition which cost several K!! I now have the dog insured but not the horses after they have had about 1 year insured as youngsters. For most of my years this has been a sound strategy but a couple of years ago I had to have a major spend on both horses and dogs and for the dog at least it seemed worthwhile to have the insurance! Vets bills, especially for small animals, can be absolutely exhorbitant. I was quoted about 8k for the dog's op. Thankfully it didn't need that but made me think...

We lost our cavi this week, he was only 6 and his premium had risen to £94 a month. We used to insure the labs and actually we had a claim for £3900 for a piece of bone stuck in one of our girls throat. We will not insure any future pets. Our lovely cavi was with Manypets, claims are currently 6 to 8 week weeks to process!.

What is a recycling policy, please?

My mistake, I always refer to it as a recycling policy but others have referred to it as a lifetime policy and I've just double checked and that is the official name for mine too!

I don't know if it was called a recycling policy at some stage because it 'recycles' each year to still cover the dog for any injuries or illnesses that it's had whilst being on the policy.

Eta - I'm with animal friends and my premium is 'only' £50 a month despite the (13yo) dog being on injections every three months (which they cover) for £70, prescribed another medication for £25 a month (luckily she only needs a low dose of these) and having been ill two years ago with over £2000 of vets fees, an operation last year for £1000.

I do have a £99 excess and contribute 20%. They've also always been amazing to deal with. Most of the time they respond and action the payment to my account on the same day it's submitted.

Having had a rescue that required surgery on his teeth, then arthridesis, and then finally an MRI and ended up costing £24k in vets bills, I will always insure now. I also have a savings account for them. But I find dog insurance much better than horse insurance.
Currently all of mine are with petplan. It’s £43 a month each for £12k vets fees per condition per year, and no exclusions. So if they suddenly develop epilepsy (I had a Great Dane who did once) they will be covered for that for life. It’s a brilliant plan and I feel much happier knowing they’re covered. Had too many dramas to not do it now haha.
