My insurance with NFU appears to have rocketed. Although I am very pleased with the service I have received from them in the past, just wondered if anyone has recently insured there horse with a new company, which one you used and why?
I have also been recommended Scottish Equestrian. Does anyone use them and how are they at settling claims?
Thanks in advance...

I just cancelled mine with NFU, not only had premium rocketed despite 11 claim free years with them , they are also changing the insurance to move away from specific exclusions to exclude anything you might ever have consulted a vet about, so all those claims for minor things I spared them the cost of will now mean most bits of his body are excluded. No Point!

scottish equestrian have been taken over by someone - at least they have moved offices from glasgow to somewhere in England, so I think they have been taken over. Just in the process of making a claim, so not sure how its going to end up.

New horse is insured with a company called Equestrian World (I think), they have the same address as the old Scottish equestrian, so assuming someone from SE has set up a new company

I may well do the same...
Was quoted for my new addition £206 from now till the end of November with NFU. Scottish Equestrian quoted £269 for the whole year! The only difference in policy I can see is that vets fees are up to £4000 with SE rather than £5000 with NFU.

Mine did but I had made 2 massive claims and one medium size one in 2 years so was seen as a higher risk. They said they will reassess if I can manage a whole claim free year.

I looked around and some were even more (petplan was scary!) and the ones that were a bit less didn't save me enough to move. Esp with horse with known issues I didn't want to risk moving.

Incidentally, the change is wording is really just that. There are now excluding pre-exising conditions but all insurance companies will retain the right to ask for a treatment history of your horse and exclude anything they feel is a preexisting condition, even if it's not an exclusion.

I prefer the fact that it is limited to a condition, with another insurance company, a friend had a whole leg excluded so even if she has something completely unrelated to the original injury, they won't pay for anything on that leg.

CB I only moved to NFU this time last year and my renewal came in recently and they wanted to increase it by £63 and that was not including the mutual discount thing they do! And I've had no claims and nothing changed in my policy across the year so I spoke to them on the phone and they've been brilliant - got it down to only a £13 increase which is much better. Sometimes it is worth having a chat with them as they may not want to lose you as a customer.

Thanks MochaDun, I will try that as it would be so much easier to keep it all in one place (have my other horse, trailer and car insured with them).

Worth trying AIMS (now owned by SEIB) excellent cover for £3k death £5k vets etc for £25 a month inc cover for hunting and when i claimed in 2005 they paid straight away :)
