Hi

I can only find insurance for vets fees for accidents for my 20yo pony. Does anyone know of anyone who will insure for vets fees for illness at that age too?

S

Pet Plan might, im not sure if you have to take out the cover before they are 20 or up to the age of 20, if you can they then cover or vets fees for injury and illness til the age of 25.
Don't know about other insurance companies.

My veteran (24) is with petplan, but she has had the policy for 13 years, so I'm not sure how restrictive they would be with a new policy...

Nope, PP will only cover them for illness if they were on cover prior to the age of 16. I doubt very much that you will find one who will- if you do let everyone know! Remember that illness cover will offer cover for things like DJD/arthritis which are obviously more prevalent in older horses so it's not worth Insurer's risk.

Just checked Pet Plans website and it says - Insure your horse before it's 20, and if you renew, you'll continue to receive vet fee cover for illness until your horse is 25.
So they won't either as pony is already 20.

My 20 year old mare is insured with South Essex Insurance Brokers for colic, third party and visible accidental injuries. I was with another broker until she was 18 but the premiums were too high.
SEIB is reasonably priced (the best I could find) and the staff are extremely helpful; they also gave me a discount when I insured my other horse with them. My pony's only insured for £500, which I was told was standard for an older horse. I was slightly perturbed when they said I could insure her for her meat value, which would bring the premium down. Poor pony!

I'm with KBIS and on my recent renewal I noticed that they have revamped their vets fees scales to include a section for 19-21yr olds for illness & accident. Couldn't see anything saying that you had to be already with them to qualify so might just be worth a call! I can certainly recommend them, been with them for years.

I've always been with SEIB and my girl is 27 now. She is still covered for vets bills provided it was for an accidental injury, but not illness. At 22 she did a tendon and the vet just had to write a report that it was an accident in the field and not an underlying problem, and they paid up without any bother.

My horse is 31 and has been with petplan since 1996, they will only cover for accidental injury. Keep meaning to change to NFU because they cover you for more on the accidental injury, you could give them a try
