Just had the renewal docs through for my 4 and a half year old Newfoundland. She has lots of allergies that are controlled with a monthly desensitizing vaccine and every couple of months will get an ear infection or become itchy as the seasons change - requiring ear drops and antihistamines.

Anyway, last year the renewal was just over £400 - I gulped but paid it as that was the first renewal after the problem had emerged and she's been anaesthetized to treat her ears, plus had steroids and got started on the vaccine.

Anyway, next year's premium will be £623!! I am gobsmacked. I am really considering not renewing but what a dilemna. If she was to break a leg or develop another chronic condition then it could cost so much. I can't even shop around as it will all now be a pre-existing condition and not insurable!!

Anyone had similar dilemna?

I'm speaking with the vet on Monday, but from my records it looks like a similar figure to what I claimed this year. They're basically getting their money back!

If its about the same as what the insurance costs to fix her up for a year then i would still get it.

Then you have the peace of mind that its there if something extra occurred during the year.

Makes me glad my insurance costs $45 a year.

Yep I would say renew it. If treating her for that condition for the year costs the same, then at least you know you have paid it already and don't have to worry about the cost each time you go to the vet, and also means you're covered for any other incidents. Working in 2 vets (a normal practice and an out of hours) I'm a massive advocate for insurance, it opens up so many more treatment options when things happen. We could save a lot more animals if people were insured, there is a lot of really advanced treatment now. Also, my 7 month old puppy just landed me a £2200 bill having a dermoid sinus removed, thank god he's insured!
Alternatively, shop around for a cheaper policy and just have the allergies as an exclusion, they will cover anything else.

Well you just spurred me into getting some other quotes for my cats! My dog is also on ongoing treatment so I can't really afford to move her poicy, my cats though I can move but my renewal prices always seemed to be the same as other companies, but I've just tried the post office and its come back a fair bit cheaper!!! for the two £75 a year cheaper!!! So guess I'm moving their policies!!!

There are so many pet insurance people now, definitely worth shopping around. The supermarkets are cheap and are reliable when paying out, More Than gave me the best quote for my dog and have paid out no trouble.

Thanks all, I think it's sensible for me to renew. She's worth it after all - just have to forego Xmas this year for the kids (only joking!)

I'd definitely renew, we've just paid out £2500 for our 1 year old Jack Russell who slipped a disc literally just twisting his back when rolling over! We did have insurance but only basic level so we were only covered for £1000 of it, but at least we had something!! Definitely shop around though, it's a competitive market out there!
