How much does your insurance company pay out for vets fees? I just got my renewal through and the maximum payment for their basic policy is £2500 which i think is a bit on the stingy side. You can pay extra to get a higher level of cover. I am with this lot because they are locally based and were recomended by other horse owners however i think maybe it is time for a change. Is there a website where you can compare different companies like you can for car insurance??

Go to a broker, mine recommends Scottish Equestrian, they do a £3k basic or an increased option of £4k but you can also get £1k of other fees.

The most important thing is that you have an insurer that pays out when you need it, much better to get £2,500 paid out than Nil despite being insured for £5k. There are a couple of cheap but useless insurers out there to be careful of.

Everyone I know who has NFU says how great they are, they aren't the cheapest but they sound as though their service is great and they pay out when you need it, a broker will know who has a good reputation but make sure they are independant.

Im with NFU and im making a claim which is already at 3.5K- they pay out upto 5k or 1 year.

Ive got nothing but praise for them- they have handled everything at this difficult time with great compassion and encouragement and im so grateful to them.

They pay out very promptly too.

Speak to your vet as they know which are good payers and which aren't - mine say NFU and Petplan are good payers & I have found Petplan are good payers.

My vet fees are £3500 but I have a high excess of £500 and the premiums are much lower, but I know they also do up to £5000 with an excess of £115. You can get a quote from the website and play around with the figures which is useful.

I'm with Scottish Equestrian too...and recently claimed for a large vet bill, but it wasn't the happiest experience.
I tried to phone them for two days (insurance companies mysteriously seem to answer 'new business' lines much faster than 'claims' lines) and resorted to getting a guy in the offices above them to run down and beg them to phone me...
Good luck in finding good insurance...perhaps as an experiment you should try the 'claims' lines to see which companies answer

hmm thats not totaly true, i just rang to renew insurance with SEIS and was on hold for 5mins

just to be told oh sorry i cant speak to you because of the Data protection act, i need to get my dad to ring up to say its ok for them to speak to me (all because i wasnt quite 18 when i took out the insurance)

wouldnt have minded apart from that i only got the letter to renew insurance yesterday and it has to be done by 3rd August (it was late due to a system update apparently)
and its me paying for my nedd not my dad. They close at 5 and dad isnt home until 5:30 and out at 6:15.

rant over

- i know its not there fault and theyre doing their job its just been one fo those days, not helped by me throwing up all morning

If NFU had rang me back i may have gone with them, but theyve not bothered either

It is SEIS i am with - have been for 5 years since getting this horse. Previously i was with one of the cheap but bad reputation companies - however they paid out in full for vets fees and the value of my mare when she was pts. Must admit I was sh**ing myself as everyone said they wouldn't pay out. I decided to change when i got the new horse as all the folk at my yard were with SEIS and I didn't want to chance my luck again with my previous insurers. However looks like people on here may be getting a better deal from SEIS than i am. I believe they have been taken over or something - does anyone know anything about this.
