Following on from the horse insurance post I would love to know what people view as being 'expensive' insurance wise?
Obviously insurance is based upon cover required etc,but generally what is considered to be an expensive monthly premium?

I have never paid for my insurance on a monthly basis but from what I remember my insurance per horse was about £400 per year, so somewhere around £30 per month. I had all my horses insured for the minimum amount of £900 so that kept my premiums down but I still enjoyed full vets cover.

I wouldn't have bothered with insurance in the UK if my premiums had been more than £500 or £600 per horse though.

Well, personally, I reckon anything more than about 8% of the value of the horse is expensive. Without LOU I was paying approx 10% to insure one of mine. That was for death and vets bills upto £5k basically :-O

Oh yes, and of course they exclude anything you subsequently claim on, so the true cost rises after each and every claim as well

well, for me, ponio is worth approxomately 450 quid. He's unbroken and lives at grass. Use wise, it'll just be breaking and hacking. But I have been quoted stupid amounts to insure him, like 300 quid a year. And places that have a ridiculous excess. I have just found a company who will insure him at 175 a year, with a 115 excess.

I think insuring a horse is like insuring anything, check quotes with the various companies, some are far more expensive that others but give similar cover, then pick the one you want.

If the previous insurance post has disappeared I would imagine it was removed due to various posts regarding a company that people believed was reluctant to pay out claims.
