Hi

I have two horses which are insured for death, 3rd party liability and personal injury cover for me. Sometimes I handle other peoples horses to help with problem behaviour and sometimes I have another horse over at the livery yard I am on (not the same one) for a month or so to sort out problems. They are not high value horses due to their problems and the most expensive would value at £2000.

I have been thinking that instead of getting seperate insurance for the horses that BHS Gold membership would cover it. I'm not much of a fan of BHS due to my experience of BHS training centres and BHS II's messing up my horses while on loan but would like to know if anyone has any experience as to whether the insurance provided by the Gold membership is any good (particularly the personal injury area - just in case lol) and as comprehensive as getting it through other such as Petplan.

Also, I often don't do things the BHS way due to these being known problem horses where I am their last resort, so would this cause a problem in event of a claim?

I am not bothered with the death or vets fees areas of it.

so... anyone?

I think gold membership is designed for personal third party ie it covers your own horses so I don't think it's suitable for people schooling or training other peoples i don't think it would cover you if a another persons horse damaged something and you where being paid to train it or you where blamed for damage to the horse.
I know when I had some ones horse for a while I had to have a proper loan agreement to make it ok.

the gold cover will not cover your business you need to get correct third party liability other wise you could end up with a very large bill

It's what's known as a 'last resort' policy, so any personal injury that is horse related is covered provided you are not able to claim on another policy (so in the scenario above, the owner's policy would cover it, otherwise you can claim on the BHS).

When I joined for the insurance, no details of my horses were given. The policy applies to you, not a specific horse. Does that make sense? I wasn't interested in death of vet's fees, either, so for me it was a bargain.

can't find the insurance policy document at the mo but I am sure it will only cover your own horses or those you are in charge of but only for your personal use/enjoyment. I am sure there is a clause that it will not cover any incidents where money has changed hands for the service.

If you are sorting out other peoples horses then you need your own cover!

BHS gold membership - read the small print! You will only get paid out if you LOSE a leg or arm etc, not if you break it!

Personal injury insurance for you is available from Combined Insurance of America (They have a Europe office in surrey) CIA insure most if not all the work riders and yardies in newmarket!

Also if you are handling other peoples horses as a business then you also need Public Liability and Care, Custody and Control insurances in place.

Good luck

No it's not a business (I work full time in IT). It's my own two horses plus the odd one with me as a favour.

With the problem horses I help with or look after for a short time, no money changes hands. I do it cos I enjoy a project and seeing the horses progress or get a good home rather than seeing Potters as their end. The owners just pay the field/stable rent costs direct to the livery yard. Not all of them have been insured when they came but it was agrees that costs were up to the owners and my time spent on the horse was for free.

Thanks for the info so far, all very interesting.

I am a bhs gold member for the 3rd party insurance for a couple of my horses that aren't worth enough to insure properly. I rang up to ask about what it covered when I was working with horses and was told by the woman working there that it was rubbish! As has been said, you only get paid if you actually lose a limb, or if you are completely and incurably paralysed or if you die. Its better than nothing, but not by much! I would only ever use it for the horses 3rd party, not for personal injury! :o

Sorry if i've got this completely wrong, but i thought the 3rd party insurance was for cover if your horse or one in your care injures somebody else or somebodies property! It will also cover the legal fees. This is something that that everyone who owns or works with horses should have cover for as a minimum.

PS. I've used the Gold membership legal hotline for advice and they were very good.
