I've been offered a horse on a weeks trial. Just wondering where I stand with insurance. If the owner has the horse insured is their insurance still valid?

The horse would be insured under my policy for third party but not for anything like vet bills or loss of use.

Do insurance companies offer just a weeks worth of insurance? Anyone any experience of this?

My question is solely about insurance with regard to the horse, not the rider.

Thanks.

I would think the horse would be insured for vets fees but maybe get owner to check with insurance they will need to let them no he is at different yard if he is and also check he is insured with others riding him not just owner.

One horse I had on trial was not insured I insured it with the NFU having explained to them the circunmtances it failed the vet and was returned and they charged me for a month very fair I thought.
The other was insured again with the NFU the owner told them the circumstances and her insurance covered the horse.

I would talk to the owner about what would happen if the horse was injured, if they are happy for you just to return it broken (and that is clearly written in your contract - I'd have a loan contract just the same as a long term loan even tho it's just a week) no problem.
I'd be more concerned as the owner from an insurance perspective TBH, the situation would get tricky if (god forbid) the horse dies, you could claim on your insurance and you'd get the money but how would the owner ensure she gets the money from you (I'm sure you're lovely and would just hand it over - but others may not be!!!)

Our pony went on a weeks trial last year. NFU were happy to continue same cover with me insuring and I let them have the address where he had moved to. Thankfully they bought him as it was a lovely home.

Our horse wasn't insured by previous owners as they are loaded. We took out insurance with KBIS for month trial and had we not bought her could have cancelled after that month.
