I'll try to keep this short...

Basically, nearly 12 months ago I took out an insurance policy for my horse.

Half way through I claimed for treatment totalling £1090. Insurance paid out no problems.

Now the treatment is ongoing for the problem and I only claimed 2 months ago. I'm lead to believe you get 12 months to claim on the same problem before the insurance expires for that specific problem and no longer covers it.

My insurance is now due to renewal at the end of this month and the text states we will not cover existing injuries from previous claims...!

So basically I'm a couple of months into treatment for an ongoing injury and now they tell me they won't cover
it in the renewal...

He's had further treatment last week and I've put a second claim in so hoping to use that as a lifeline.

Any thoughts?

I'll be speaking to them tomorrow but I wondered if anyone had previous experience of this or thoughts.

Please :)

*normally* the claim will continue past the renewal up until the year mark. Or thats how it works with NFU who im with :)
think thats always put in the renewal though, even if the above happens :)

Thats what Ive always come across when its happened - providing you stay with the same company, the year is from the date it started (not nececcarily the same as the date the horse was first seen)

It's for 12 months so you will be able to claim even if you've renewed. Normally when they accept your claim they send you a letter telling you the date your claim expires. That's what they NFU sent me.

Thank you :)

Re-assuring to know, been worrying all weekend.

I'll dig out my letter and double check it.

Thanks folks, appreciate the replies.

What everyone else said! Although it shouldn't actually matter whether you renew or not. They will put an exclusion on (or I think NFU just put a broad one on excluding any pre-existing conditions now?). Anyway, that won't apply until the 12 mths are up or you run up the max of your vets fees cover whichever comes first.

Not quite the same but we had an ongoing claim with PetPlan for one of our dogs. They said that at renewal even though she was meant to be covered for life yadda yadda the claim would effectively start again and we would have to pay the excess again. We cancelled the policy!

That's a bummer, ISHmad. This shouldn't be the case with equine insurance. There should be, somewhere in the policy wording, reference to a 12 month extension and as others have said that particular condition should be covered for 12 months DATE OF ONSET, regardless of whether you renew. However, if you change companies, the new company would treat this as a pre-existing condition and, depending on what the condition is, might even place an exclusion on specific limbs or recurrence of that condition in future (eg colic).

I think it would be best to just ask them? The 'will not cover existing illness etc' is a line which most insurance companies use in their renewals. If you contact them at least you'll have the definate answer! x I think they will cover the 'condition' for 12 months from the initial date the vet saw your horse, this shouldnt be affected if you renew or not. However, I'd stay with the same company unless they put it up by alot though as they have your horses history and if you know they are a good company - stick with them x Another insurance will put exclusions on anyway x
