Hi everyone; I am new to the forum so apologies for no avatar etc yet!

However time is of the essence because our new horse is arriving on trial on Saturday so I need to make my mind up on insurance by tomorrow afternoon. Her owners don't have her insured and as she is going to be at a livery yard with us we want to make sure we are covered in case anything happens to her or she causes damage etc. My rider insurance only covers me when riding not for field or yard incidents etc.

Have had quotes from NFU (very helpful but expensive), E&L (heard a few bad things about them but cheap) and KBIS (who haven't replied to me to confirm if we don't keep the horse after the trial month that we can cancel with no penalty fee).

Are there any others we should look at? She is a very young TB so I want full cover for vets fees etc and in case of death should anything awful happen and we had to 'pay' her owners for her value.

All advice gratefully received thanks!

You are right to keep clear of E&L & their subsiduarys as they have more adverse posts regarding their service or lack of it than any other company.

I, like many on this forum were with NFU until a couple of years ago. They were very good but suddenly they put their prices up very hight so many migrated to other companies. I am with KBIS, their premiums are reasonable & I've heard good things about them. I have been fortunate in the fact that I have not needed to make a claim in that time for either of my horses. Until that happens I can only go on what others have said about the company.

There are many good companies out there, E&L are not one of them. :(

i am with KBIS for one and PetPlan for the other :) they are both good but like all insurance companies - any excuse to have exclutions... PetPlan are more expensive than KBIS and when my insurance is up for renewal i will change over to KBIS for both of them but KBIS are not the cheapest either but they are good :)

Hi - I went through the same process, my lovely girl arrived a few weeks ago and is in livery too. After many quotes I found the cheapest (by a long way) and comprehensive cover at horse-insurance.co.uk. Of course I'll only know how good they are if I ever have to claim!

Another one with Pet Plan. I deal with them at work and the cover suits my old boy.
Jazz14, think horse insurance.co.uk is underwritten with E & L.

Jazz14 I'm sorry to be negative but I think they are underwritten by E&L - I would seriously recommend checking this then reviewing some comments on here (or any other website) about them if you would like to make an informed opinion.

I have yet to hear one positive thing about e&l. A friend of mine who is the type who will always take the cheapest option even if not the wisest has just been burnt massively by them. They refused to pay out because she has not kept her jabs up to date a few years before (she was claiming for a tendon injury!), her horse has been on box rest for 4 months because she cannot afford the treatment he needs and they are now taking them to court - nightmare.

I'm with Petplan and despite trying to convince them I am the legal owner of my horse at present (though they have been helpful with this as well) I really cannot fault them. They have paid out every time, I've claimed £6000 in vets fees this year and am currently seeking loss of use on my boy, and got loss of use with no problems on my old mare.

Hey Tonker121 no problem, was laughing to myself after posting cos I looked up the senior company to H-I.co.uk and found e&l. Its not like me to choose the cheapest, I usually go for substance, thought I had this time ha ha. Hope I don't have to find out!

I'm with Shearwater and they have been great. My young mare fractured her pedal bone on Boxing Day and ended up with an MRI scan which revealed long term ligament damage and unfortunately she has now been confirmed as likely to be permanently around 2/10ths lame and I'm starting the claim for loss of use.

Not only have they been friendly and understanding they have been very prompt in payment for veterinary fees, the MRI scan, rehab costs and I am not anticipating there will be any issues with the loss of use claim either given their track record to date.

I bought another horse this year and had no hesitation in putting him with Shearwater too. I didn't even consider getting a quote from somewhere else.

My horsebox is with KBIS but only because the underwriters for Shearwater insisted I have a tracker put on but the underwriters for KBIS did not, the puzzling bit there was the underwriting company for both is Red Star

My old boy was with NFU but they were not so good and I no longer have him insured because he has kissing spines and navicular syndrome so pretty much so many exclusions its not worth the cost.

Ok thanks for the advice everyone; I will give Shearwater, Petplan and Amtrust a ring tomorrow and see what they can come up with in terms of price. Just need to check cancellation fees to make sure that if we don't keep her after the trial that we don't get stung!

Try Scottish Equestrian too, i've been with them for years now and had a few claims for one thing or another, they have always paid my vet direct and very quickly with no ifs and buts.

I am with SEIB and after 5 years with them, I have just put in first claim as my mare has a tendon injury! They have paid out £3000 so far without any problems! The only thing that they don't cover is livery, extra bedding and hay whilst on box rest which NFU do!

I'm with KBIS now, second year of renewing with them! Dealt with last years claim well no complaints!! Was with NFU again were good but when they put my premium up by £150 I decided to swap to KBIS!!

I moved to Amtrust a couple of years ago after NFU increased their prices.

NFU always paid out without any problems. I haven't made a claim via Amtrust but have always found them very helpful on phone and prices competitive when comparing like for like with other insurance companies.

I was with E&L and to be honest no problems. They just payed me for the theft of my stolen horse.
I will be insuring my new boy with them.
They were really good on getting the adjusters to pull their finger out.E@L were really quick &
Once claim was sorted I recieved my check within a week.
A normal claim isnt as long but with theft claims it it does take a bit longer due to police reports, adjusters coming out etc. I find E&L ok.

the above are a subsiduary of E and L-they have many different names, most vets will not deal directwith them because in the unlikely event that they do pay out on a claim it is usually very delayed

Both ours are with Equine Insurance Solutions (insuremyhorse.co.uk). They've been fab, from claims with my mare's tendon and associated investigation including MRI, to paying out promptly last year when she died after colic surgery. We were with Amtrust before that and they were also good when we claimed for surgery to sew my pony's leg up after she walked through a gate and skinned it. I would recommend either of those two.

Im with Scottish Equine (SEIS). Will find out how good they are this week hopefully as just submitted my first ever claim....
