Have looked at Pet Plan (as we were with them last time I owned) but they seem quite expensive.

So who do you insure with?
Do you feel they're good value for money?
How difficult are they when you actually need to use them?

It'd be for an ex racer, 16.2hh+ between 6-10yrs

Doing my homework before I commit!!!

I use petplan, no they're not the cheapest but I've had absolutely excellent service from them for many years for my walking-vets-bill excuse for a horse! They do also,I believe cover full price of stuff that other companies will only contribute towards.

NOT Equine & Leisure, E&L or any combination thereof.

Choose one who will work with your vet over claims rather than one which requires you to pay the bill and then claim it back. Paypal and NFU are not cheap but you get what you pay for and they are both very good (and quick) with settlement.

Be aware that if you keep your tack in a communal tack room at the yard it will not be covered for theft. It's only covered if you have your own personal lockable tack room and you are the only person with access. If you keep your tack at home it may not be worth covering it on your equine insurance as it may be covered by your house contents insurance. If you have more than one horse, it may be worth taking out BHS Gold membership as it will cover you for public liability for all your horses and this will be cheaper than including it in your insurance policy.

I'm with NFU and have never had any problems with claims or advice (in fact it was their call centre agent who advised me to take out BHS Gold rather than paying two lots of Public Liability on their policy!) and their fee for paying monthly is very reasonable compared with some companies but there are other equally good companies.

Just spotted this, Horseatemymoney. Great minds think alike!

The previous owner of one of mine had a very big claim for colic surgery and, of course, being E & L, they had to pay for and then claim from E&L. The last time I saw them, 18 months after I bought him and TWO YEARS after surgery, they STILL hadn't received the cheque! It was "in the post" or there was another form to complete. This despite the fact that E&L had agreed to pay up! God only knows if or when they ever got their claim paid.

This! ^^^

Also check the underwriters of smaller companies as some use (or used to for pets anyway) E&L!

PetPlan would be my first choice, but I've also heard very good things about NFU - not the cheapest, but it will be worth it if you need to claim.

I have rider insurance (£7ish pcm) which covers me for personal injury, 3rd party, public liability. Trying to work out if it's cheaper to keep this and miss it off horse insurance or add it to horse insurance

Due to increasing premiums i have gone with animal friends..... Not had to claim but only heard good things from those that have!

I've had a nightmare with getting Petplan to pay out on what should be a straightforward death from illness claim. They still haven't fully settled the claim which was submitted in November.

My vet said they are no better at paying out than E&L , but the premiums are higher.

If you search Petplan on here you will find I'm not the only one.....

Have heard great things about KBIS so went with them.
Got my public liability and personal accident through WHW and then bog standard vets fees with them.

Petplan are very expensive as are NFU

I use Equestrian world - I have had three massive claims in two years with no queries. Where we lost the horse the claim was all settled within 8 weeks. Excellent customer service :)

SEIB all the way. Petplan were useless, although it was a few years ago.

SEIB have paid out every time with my accident prone ex-racer, including hospitalisation and great after care. I have increased the excess to £250 on both horses and cancelled loss of use so my premiums are only around £35 a month for the TB.

Amtrust - seem to be run by horse owners who understand it all - I've had 2 big claims in 6 years and they have been fast, efficient and sympathetic. Couldn't fault them.

Am trust equine for me to. Massive claim last year, very helpful & very understanding when I couldn't speak on the phone for blubbering!

I wouldn't entertain SEIB that's for sure, not unless you want some rude clueless idiot on the end of a phone trying to diagnose your horse and telling you how you should treat it over what a vet and other proffesionals have said, then exclude everybody part on your horse to prevent paying out.

Am I bitter ...yes just a tad.

NFU all the way.

Paid out with out question every time.

Went with pet plan for a year with one of my other horses and their words at the time were 'If you insure with us before your horse is 19 we will fully cover your horse until he is 25'

Guess what the cheeky monkeys did! Didn't insure him on that policy, oh no, they popped him on the veteran policy which of course does not cover him fully!

So no I DO NOT RATE PET PLAN!

Went back to NFU after this!

What sort of prices do you all pay if you don't mind? Mine is currently grass/youngstock, 3rd party and vets bills for £5k, it is £15 a month with Petplan. It will need to be changed once horse starts doing more though.

I'm with pet plan and can't rate them enough! Had two separate claims, both over 1k in a year and they paid out both in 4 days of receiving the claim!

Scottish Equestrian or SEIS are excellent. I've had a few claims in the last year which have been paid quickly and I can't fault them. Premiums are very competitive and even after a large claim for my boy in Leahurst his premium only went up by £2 a month on renewal. Can't rate them enough!
