insurance woe's (help please)

hi all

my friend's horse has gone lame etc etc

anyway she is insured with E&L :rolleyes: i have told her many time's to change but anyway

they are being very unhelpful ,she has had the horse 7yrs now and they (E&L) want the horses passport because the horse hasn't seen the vet for 18 months (she lost her job and didn't get vacc's done)
they want to check she hasn't seen any other vet for the complaint being claimed for (fair enough) but they also want to go through her history in the passport contacting vets who have previously vaccinated the horse asking for history on her pre 7 yrs ago :confused:
can they do that ?

are they just taking the mick now and trying to find excuses to avoid paying out ?
they have said it doesn't matter that she missed last years vacc's but i thought that was a condition of insurance :(

iv'e told her to wright everything down ,time ,date's etc
there was a worry they wouldn't pay out when she first called them as the horse has had a claim on that leg a few years ago for a fractured splint bone but when she rang (before diagnosis) they did say they would be happy to pay out as long as it is nothing to do with any tendons or ligaments and on ringing them back they said "its the bone so should be fine to claim" even though it was a bone involved in the other claim :confused:


my friend is very worried as she has not got the money to keep this horse with out the insurance money (she is on permanent danilon) and is panicking that she will have to have her pts
she loves her to bits despite the fact that she now won't ever be any thing more than a v light hack and the horse is happy with help from the danilon

also does any one know how much a box (contains 60 i think) of danilon is ?

any help on how to deal with this insurance co would be hugely appreciated
 
Can't help with the insurance woes, but ask the vet to write the prescription and buy the danilon online.

I think they can ask for information from previous vets, to prevent fraud. I'm surprised more companies don't to be honest, as it would be very easy to switch vet and then start a new claim.

hi thank you i didn't think about getting a prescription for the danilon :)

yes i see why they would want to check incase of fraud but back to before she bought the horse seems a little extreme , she's a little wary of sending her passport off to insurance co too tbh
 
She does not have to send passport off just photo copy it page for page even if the page is blank. I'am with E&L yes they tried to get out of paying for her colic op. i got on to ombudsman. With in the week they payed up. DO make sure she tells them she will send photo copy of it page for page. Its what they said i could do as did not wanna send it off and it get lost. As for going as far back as before she had horse theres nothing they can do as horse was not hers she did not know.

thanks for your help i have passed that on to her:)

she is sending a photo copy of all the pages now and telling them it is on its way ,should she wait for a responce before contacting the ombudsman ?
or should she contact them now ,they are being pleasant on the phone just extreemly unhelpful and won't give an answer weather or not they are paying

they have the vets claim form and the one the owner filled in
 
Ask the vet for a prescription. My vet charges me £10 for this then buy the boxes online, will work out cheaper. My mare goes through alot of danilon and I can get 1-2 boxes a time.
 
Is there any reason the horse can't have bute instead? It works out cheaper, come in boxes of 100. It's the same thing really only less palatable so some horses turn there nose up. I use to mix mine in a small amount of molasses or for the only mate I added apart ringed the bute.

thank you for replying ,how much is a box of danilon ?
she hasn't had a bill yet and is picking another box up today but is worrying how she is going to pay for it if they won't pay out so be helpful if she knew appprox how much it could be


how do you contact an ombudsman ? will it be in the small print of the insurance doc's ?

sorry if thats a stupid question i desperatly want to help her out and i haven't had any experience of anything like that :o

she won't touch it at all :(
she'll only eat the danilon if it has molasses and mint in it
 
Wait and see what they say before you get ombudsman on to it. I called them as soon as E&L said there not paying because she had colic back in march and i never told them. I did but did not get them to pay as it was my excess anyways. Then in nov she was rushed in to vets as she had entrapment colic. First one was wind colic. She is now not coverd for colic but ombudsman soon got them to pay out. They can not give you a yes or no as it gets passed on to someone who has to look into it and find out if they should pay out of not. Ie find away out of paying.
 
I got my last box from pet drugs online and it was £40 for 60sachets plus the £10 I had to pay for vets prescription. Vets will charge nothing up to double for the drugs. My mare was on long term norodine. The vets wanted £53 for a box and I got a pescription for 15 boxes and paid £20 for each box from an online company.

they are happy to have a photo copy so she is sending that off now and i guess its a case of wait and see now

i hope so ,she really can't afford to pay the bill without the insurance money :(

there all that matters in the end but its a worry you just don't need thinking how your going to pay for it ,the past few weeks its been she's got 6 days to show improvement or pts a few times so its a bit of a nightmare to have gotton her comfortable only to then loose her because she can't afford the on going treatment :(
 
I know just how she feels. It stressed me out no end to think how am i going to pay. The thing with E&L is there hoping you will roll on your back and do nothing to try get them to pay. When i called ombudsman and told them. They sent E&L a letter for everthing to be sent to them and there looking into why there not paying. I soon got a email back off E&L to say because i been with them for a few years and as a good while gesture there pay it in full.

E&L did a history check on my pony when I claimed for her laminitis X-rays....which is fair enough, they couldn't go back to before I bought her as i was the one to get her passported but they were happy enough to settle my vets bills in full. I found them really helpful and they payed fairly quick to. E&L arnt all bad :-)

to be fair they did pay out for a fractured splint bone the same horse had a couple of years ago and they have been friendly on the phone there just mucking about now on giving an answer weather they are going to pay or not :(
my friend had lost her job and so is already v short of cash and if they are not going to pay the horse will sadly have to be pts as she cannot afford to pay the bill as it already stands without adding more to it :(
