Hi Folks. I'm sure this kind of post has been done before but i've gone back through pages & cant find it.

Anyway, my new horse is arriving this weekend and im looking at insurance but there's so many it's completely frying my brain now!

What's everyone's experience with their insurance companies? The horse i'm insuring is a TB mare, 13 yrs old and will be used mainly for hacking, local shows (dressage, maybe a bit of SJ), nothing too adventurous for now! lol

All from personal experience...
Petplan - won't go back to. Insured my old TB, were great up until I had to have him pts (ruptured collateral ligament & collapsed coffin joint). Despite it being on the advice of my vets and the animal health trust they took a number of months to agree and made a difficult time even worse.
NFU - great until you claim. We claimed a lot on our new TB and our premiums went through the roof and he had excessive exclusions.
KBIS - amazing, would highly recommend. Claimed a large amount on current injury and they have paid up no arguments.

it's a minefield, my mare is with NFU and has done her suspensory but they wont' pay loss of use until a year has passed to 'make sure she is definitely not rideable' charming! Especially when you consider that the injury happened last July and they only cover vets fees for the injury till this July. So, by waiting the year and then having her leg scanned etc all over again I'd have to fork out for the vets fees myself. Not great....

My horse is insured with NFU & I have never had any problem with them paying out for any claim & neither have any of the people on our yard who are als insured with them.

There are loads of insurance compnies out there to chose from but I would not recommend E&L (Equine & Leisure). If you search previous posts you will have loads to read about them.

Funny thing about Pet Plan (with whom I'm having problems at the moment) and KBIS (who I find great) - they are both owned and run by Allianz.

I have insured with PetPlan and am now with NFU. Never had any problems with either.

Petplan have been nothing but trouble for me! Took policy out in October and have yet to receive correct policy documents, so dread to think how they would deal with a claim! Guess who won't be renewing their policy!

Hi there, just to clarify.... KBIS/Shearwater/SEIB are all brokers or intermediaries, which means given the details for your insurance they will place it with a 'panel' of insurers. So the actual risk is not taken on by them.
Usually they will handle all the claims for you and you will never have any contact with the insurer....
Generally people seem to like this approach - as it means they 'fight your corner'.
I've had great experiences with Petplan, but moved to SEIB and am now insured with some random overseas insurer, but haven't had any problems...
Sorry for the rant and being geeky... Avoid E&L....

Thanks for your help everyone, from what i've heard & quotes i've had so far i think it's going to be either KBIS or Shearwater. Everyone's opinions relly help on things like this as it all seems like a bit of a mine field for first time insurers!
