Insurance

I have just insured with E&L I have my cats insured with Petplan and know it is the most expensive for cats but they cover them for Dental (Siamese cats prone to bad teeth!) the premium for Jack with Petplan was £37.95 per month!!!! and with E&L only £20.34 for the same cover as far as I can see! although the excess is more with E&L. It pays to get loads of quotes I used the web before deciding.

heard really bad things about E&L, a friend had real trouble with them, please dont be fooled by the cheap prices

thank you, i used to be insured with E&L years and years ago although i never claimed but i have just bought a foal so want a good insurance company and have herd bad reports about them

If you are insured with E&L be very VERY careful! Read everything in detail, check the small print and, if you ever have to claim make sure you do it by the book in regards to their procedures and keep EVERY bit of correspondence you have.

At the end of the day they are goverened and regulated by the same people as every other insurance company but, for some reason they do appear to make it VERY difficult to make a claim. However, providing you do everything by the book you should not have a problem but just make sure you're clued up as to what you're doing.

Be prepared to fight for stuff. At the end of the day there's a reason they are cheap - they don't settle/pay out on claims like other companies!!! Oh, and I worked for an equine insurance company so i know the full ins and outs of how they work (i didn't work E&L!)

Both my horses and my dog are with Petplan and I have had to claim for all of them.
Old horse I have had to claim twice for - once when he slit his back leg open and the other when he fractured his radius.
Dog I have had to claim for arthritis
I currently have a claim going for my new horse (bought in April - illness started in late June) who is currently in Edinburgh Vet hospital.
Petplan have been superb. Their premiums are more expensive, but I have yet to have a problem with them. There are certain exclusions for example they won't pay for the livery bill for the time she is in hospital, but I knew that when I took the policy out. They also won't pay any transport costs to hospital. They all have some things that they won't pay for, but as long as you are aware of this, Petplan have my vote every time.
So if anyone from Petplan is reading this, many thanks.

I'm with KBIS who were fab when i had to make 3 claims within a year that totaled around 12k. Found them very helpful on the phone, and paid out very quickly.

I use petplan and I have had to make 2 claims for separate issues and I have never had any issues with them....they have been prompt with all payments and correspondance.

Although Petplan are certainly not the cheapest, its when you have the situation where you are going to need to claim, the last thing you need at that time is the worry about whether they will pay up and whether the benefit of a cheaper quote is worth more than the stress and upset if the insurance company starts creating problems and refuses to pay....

This is certainly something I learnt the hard way - I had decided to use a cheaper insurance company for my car, however after an accident they have been an absolute down and out nightmare...I have learnt to my cost that going with the cheaper option is not the best....I will never make that mistake with my horse insurance....

I also have heard extremely bad things about E&L and I will never use them....my advise would be to make sure you check all the small print (i.e who is the underwriter of the insurance, what the excess is etc etc). This is something I foolishly didnt do with my car insurance when I took it out and it has come back to bite me big time :(

I have heard that NFU is also good.....my friends have used them and never had any issues.....
