My mare had colic surgery in september, and a year previous to that she had surgery on one of her legs, for a wound that went down to the bone. She has also had pastern dermatitis and sarcoid treatment.

She is currently insured for vet fees and presently is in foal, so only used for breeding presently, but last year was shown, so is insured for that as well.

My question is, is it worth her still being insured as shes had the big one?

Are there any insurance companies that would cover her for colic again?

I have BHS membership for public liability. she's a 10 year old arab mare

Speaking from someone who has had about 10 claims in the last few years for various horses I would definitely still insure her!

They wont cover colic unless you can argue it was caused by something random that is not likely to occur, and then they MAY cover her in the future ( I work at a vets so know this has happened with some clients). What type of colic was it?

As you have mentioned- even wounds can give you a huge bill. A freak accident in the field can mount up to thousands once you have paid out for re-dresses etc so personally I think its silly not being insured, even if some of the maor things like colic are excluded.

Also, eyes, heart, respiratory problems, not to mention foaling problems are all risky and expensive.

I look at it as: if something, god forbid, happened and you werent insured, could you bear to make the decision between finding the money or having her PTS? :(

I was thinking still insure, but the list of exclusions are so long!

The colic was caused by her eating a small piece of wire, probably from a chinese lantern, but she had to have three foot resected, due to the damage it had caused.
She also has there back leg excluded due to the injury, and all skin complaints!

Just so glad I insured her to start with or she'd not be here making babies!

If she has no other colic episodes in the next year or two speak to insurance co. when you are due for renewal. As due to wire as opposed to random twist or entrapment etc may be able to get letter from the vet saying not been seen for colic since. At least if theyput it down to trauma then may still cover her for an impaction etc.

Can think of a few instancee where they have paid up a second time for a different colicy incident that was unrelated and all been fine.

Will be good piece of mind for you if covered for being a mummy :)

Thanks. I think I will see if I can do that.

Chinese lanterns really need banning. poor girl, shes very lucky to still be here and the foal is even luckier!
