I know this has been done to death, so apologies! :o

How much does it cost to insure your horse, and who with?

I've been getting quotes and it's going to cost me roughly £400 a year :)

Thank youu :D

Nope but I've found when insured for vets fees its costs me more to pay for them than if i just pay for them out my pocket without insurance. I think veterinary insurance is a bit of a con to be honest!

Thats why my horses have in a sense their own little bank account... haha.. I keep topping up my savings account so if i ever do have to pay for something large... its there! And I won't have to pay more on insurance when the premium goes up.. if they get poorly. I think thats a win-win situation!

Yeah, does sound like a good idea, but in reality if my horse needed a colic op, which, touch wood, he wont, being able to pay a £3 - 5,000 vets bill would really damage my bank account, else I don't think I'd bother insuring him :)

Yeah I see your point.. mines at 5,000 minimum (just in case) but it is difficult to get the money together!

If I had a decent amount to start off then I'd probably do you're idea, but if I pay £50 a month into a bank acount, if anything happened this year, then I'd only have £600 max to pay it off. It's swings and roundabouts really  :D

Hmmm I know it is a bit of a nightmare.. but I think at the yard I used to work at they were all insured with NFU... the best I've come across for horses. If I was to insure, I would pick them!

I've got a few online quotes and I'm going to be ringing around tomorrow, NFU are top of my list as I've heard good things about them, but tbh I think all insurance companies are the same, if anything does happen it's going to be a struggle to get them to pay out, but I can be a persuasive cow when I want to be :D :D

I'm with NFU. I pay roughly £760 but this includes cover for my horse trailer and extra cover for Jumping and dressage saddles, the standard tack cover only goes up to £500.00 per item and I wanted both saddles covered in case our tack room ever got broken in to. My vet bills are up to £5000 but I don't have loss of use cover.

Yeah they are definitely the best... I know what you mean they all want to take your money but none of them want to give it back!!

Just looked at my policy if you take out the extras (trailer and saddles) horse only would be £570.00 My horse's value is down as 4K

I have 2 insured with Petplan and 1 with NFU. NFU are expensive but brilliant - I have claimed nearly £14k from them in 18 months and not a quibble. They pay half hospitalisation costs and my horse spent 3 weeks in Newmarket and local vets in this period. Many insurers don't pay anything towards hospital costs. They also covered up to £1,000 of alternative treatments like physio, osteopath and acupuncture.
My horse has sadly just been branded for LOU and I cannot fault them - they were kind and understanding, professional and prompt on payments. I have no hesitation in recommending them especially if you have a competition horse.
I have had 2 other horses insured with NFU in the past and again I had significant claims and they were really good and prompt with payment.
I cannot comment on Petplan as thankfully I haven't had to claim from them :)

I would never risk not having insurance though. My mare lacerated her eye on a hedge (HAWTHORN) within 3 months of me getting her and she had 2 operations at Newmarket - total bill was £5,800.

Brilliant, that's great to hear. :) I'm going to give them a ring tomorrow, as long as there isn't a massive difference in price between NFU and other companies I think I'll be going with them. :)

No I've never had claim but plenty of my friends have, and they've always paid out. They also don't have a lot of the small print some of the others have such as types of locks on tack rooms doors. Also he is covered for eventing up to Novice level automatically with no extra charge with NFU, that is one of the main reasons I switched to them. Although some others were cheaper by the time I'd upped the cover for eventing it was about the same!
