My parents have recently gotten a little puppy. They haven’t insured in years, but acknowledge that after a few close calls with their last dog that public liability might be useful (v. poor recall- couple of accidents being let out).

What insurance do you recommend? Not necessarily who, but what types. They have a savings fund for vet fees that would cover most of what they’d need up to extreme measures as well as access to extra credit.

I use Tesco for the first year, not just liability but normal insurance.
I think your house contents should cover liability, might be worth a check.

I have used Tesco and Petplan, with vet's fees as well as PL as they didn't offer PL on it's own. I found both companies easy to deal with (Tesco was easier to get through to on the phone though), and they both paid out on vets claims with no questions or delay.

I had only wanted PL when I first started insuring, but found that over the lifetimes of the dogs I ended up in (in one case significant) profit, as although the dogs only had the odd minor claim when younger (e.g. a puncture wound that got infected) they lived well into old age so needed long-term medication for the last couple of years (mainly for arthritis), plus a couple of procedures (e.g. one had a tumour removed successfully).
