I have World Horse Welfare membership which includes up to £1500 cover for vets fees for accidental injury and BD membership for 3rd party cover for my horses (19, 19, 20 and 23). At their ages I wouldn’t put them through colic surgery.

I have all mine insured with Harry Hall. Increased to £3,000 and the colic surgery cover. I then have a credit card with a generous balance for anything not covered by the insurance. I don't have any oldies any more but it worked well for the older guy I lost last year.

My old boy is insured with Harry Hall for 3rd party and £3k accidental injury. No colic cover as I wouldn't put him through surgery. I do have funds available should I need them.

I would continue to insure I spent over 7k trying to save my 20 year old from a gastric impaction. Sadly in the end vet recommended PTS.

Insurance paid all vets bills, contributed to cost of PTS and I got some money towards replacement horse as even at 20 he was deemed to have a market value as he was not lame and was a very safe smart veteran schoolmaster showing at country level.

Veterans can get Cushings and need medication for that which at least would be covered for a year.
