Pony is 21, renewal has come through for £82 a month, spine, hocks, spavins and 2 teeth are excluded.

I would like to keep her insured but wondered about dropping her down to £3k rather than £5k? I wouldn’t put her through colic surgery.

I have funds to pay but as a sensible grown up with a family I would prefer to keep her insured, to date neither of her claims have come close to £5k.

Can anyone see a reason not to drop her down to £3k? She is only insured for her purchase price (£800 🤣)

I stopped insuring some years ago and put what would have been my premiums into a separate bank account. So far a lot more has gone into it than has come out. I also have public liability insurance through my membership of BD and am a member of World Horse Welfare (approx £175 per annum) which gives up to £1500 for accidental injury vet fees.

I would keep the insurance if you can if you think you might treat for Cushings which is a risk with elder ponies. Even if you don't do surgery cost of treatment medically for colic can rack up, and treatment for ulcers can be expensive too.
