i iknow it has been done to death, but true is I was settled with my insurance so did not read those posts. Well my new horse will be coming this wee and just wondering who is the best insurance and the best cost, as SEIB never told me my mare was not covered for colic or had been put on veteran insurance aged 11. so looking for another company.

which is recommended. thanx

I like Agria. You do pay an excess per year and 25% of each claim but once insured, new issues don't result in exclusions so there is no disadvantage in getting minor niggles investigated.

I’m with Agria and they’ve been brilliant at paying for my youngster’s ulcer and hock arthritis treatment! Monthly premiums are reasonable and it’s life cover! I do have to pay £450 excess for the year and 25% of each claim!

Just read the small print.
Lots don't cover colic as standard it's an add on the same with dental treatment. Just check what your actually getting
Its more SEIB said that because she had laminitis ( once) and rotated dropped pedal bone, they moved her onto veteran policy which hardly covered anything and never told me. Now I am no expect but these do not look like rotated pedal bone.

I've had a few different insurance's over the years. Petplan were OK 20 years ago and the veteran policy worked for me with my old lad well, but the premium's didn't justify the cover with subsequent horses. Horse emporium were OK for basic cover but the premium ramps up when you start adding extra's to the policy, animal friends seemed the same. I'd never use NFU, my mum had her horse (well everything actually) insured with them, they took so long to pay out that mum ended up selling the horse to cover the vet bill (to the sharer, who knew the situation and recovery time etc) and has never felt in a position to replace.

I'm pretty content with my current set up. I've got harry hall cover for all three with all the added extra's - increased cover to £3k, colic cover upto £5k, mortality, theft and straying, disposal and I've added my tack too. Then on top of this I have a savings account with a lump in it and a credit card with a decent limit on it. I feel this gives me enough control to make good decision about my horses without having to follow insurance companies guidelines. My HH membership and premium cost around £100 per quarter which covers all 3 horses.

Claims have been straight forward and dealt with quickly.

I'd recommend having a look at the Harry Hall website - It's all very clear and easy to understand too.

I am another who is with Agria, and they just paid for stifle surgery and related costs with no quibbles and very efficiently - vet dealt with direct as they have a portal. Yes 25% + £400 is a fairly steep excess but the fact there are no exclusions makes up for this tenfold, as what is most likely to go wrong in future is now that stifle.

Plus it only costs me £25 a month, I do only have £3k or £4k cover from memory, but it covered all the surgery cost so I'm happy to stick at that level

I was considering this for our new one, colic surgery can be super expensive though so I’m not sure if it’s worth going for the £6000 cover, it is a bit more 🫣

are lifetime policies transferable if you sell the horse? Just curious

Has anyone used British Pet Insurance? The quote for the horse, trailer and tack combined is very competitive! But then only covered for 12 months like most policies.

I used British Pet insurance as found them very reasonable, and when I claimed they paid out very quickly but them on renewal upped my premiums by nearly £30 a month, and then on renewal this year (no claim this year) they have upped my premiums AGAIN by near enough £30 bearing in mind what I originally claimed for is now excluded, I have now moved to a different provider

Last time I looked the colic over was colic surgery only so not covered if your horse had a bad episode and hospitalised but no surgery and it's external injuries only.

I have similar for mine who has so many exclusions but for a new horse, I'd probably take out full vet cover.

NFU are really good but expensive and priced me out after a few big claims. I've also had good experiences with Shearwater who I don't think do horse insurance now and SEIB which are ruled out.

When I was looking, liked KBIS website fir quotes as it gave a lot of flexibility to tailor your cover but I didn't go with it do don't know what they are like.

I have taken a long, hard look at all the available policies and decided that self insurance is the only way forward. Coblet is 24, and has so much wrong with him that no-one would cover him and Chief is 4 and a tough forest bred pony. Would I cough up for colic surgery for Chief - yes in an instant. Only "insurance" I insist on is my 3rd party £10M liability via BHS Gold membership.

Ok thanks we are going to insure the new one with Agria I think because of the lifetime cover, seems a very competitive option too looking at other providers

No your right. It covers the surgery but excluded livery costs. The way it reads it covers the care and recovery after surgery, but if your horse doesn't require surgery but is hospitalised it doesn't cover any of it.

Like I said it's very little money, but, accompanied with my other provisions, gives me the confidence to feel I can make decisions if needed or when I need to without having the instant stress of funding.
