From reading another thread...do you insure your horses? And do you find if the worst has happened do the companies pay out or not?

I have said yes to both. However, Amy wasn't covered for loss of use, and destruction didn't count as it was my decision - rather than a life threatening or no hope of recovery prognosis.

However, every claim made on her was paid promptly and in full.

As posted elsewhere I insure but not to the horses full value but basically to cover vets fees.
I always comply with the terms of my policy and have never had a claim refused this included £4,500 claimed a few years ago after my mare had a colic operation.

I've insured three of my last four horses. When Billy died then I claimed for £1,500 vet fees, his value, and body disposal and yes, they paid in full.

I don't insure mine anymore since I had to have my last horse pts due to colic and the insurance company have not paid me even though he was insured for death due to illness, vets fees and for the cremation. He was insured through e and l insurance!!! Say no more - I wish I knew then what I know now!!!

I put Yes and Yes, but it was for an operation not destruction. Destruction is in fact not covered often as it is on humane grounds only, most people don't seem to realise this, so I only insure for a nominal value and get full vets cover.

Bloss is currently insured for 2.5k, however when it comes to renewing hers in october il be reducing it down to the minimum and just get vets bills up to a certain amount covered.

Archie is insured for what i paid for him and for LOU, as if something were to happen to him there is absolutly no way i could afford to replace him.

I shall be doing the suggestion of putting money in a savings account tho, as i think thats definately a good idea.

My previous horse was insured with nfu and she had to have a hobday and tiebak. They paid out over £2k with no probs at all. Now both are insured with AMTrust but I haven't had to claim yet.

When I first bought my horse I was going to wait until the Monday to sort the insurance out - he came on the Friday - but I turned him out on the Saturday and he got kicked and fractured his splint bone

I would always insure before I collected them now!!!

Mine were both insured (although the old one with a different company), when they were both killed last year NFU paid out in full £5000 for my mare within about 2 weeks. The other company (not mentioning any names!) did pay out for the old pony eventually but it took ages! NFU have also paid out for without question for an operation on the above mare which was about £4000 the year before.

Higgs PTS May 05. insured with NFU who paid me what I'd paid for him, plus vets here, transport to Leahurst, colic surgery, euthanasia etc etc, all in all came to over £10k.
Pidge is insured with them and they are currently paying for his hock spavin treatment, again no problems with claiming or them paying out.

Both mine are insured. My lad is with E&L but have not claimed. My new girl is with KBIS,she has very basic cover as she is a companion/hopefull broodmare,She is liability, vets and theft.

Ours have all been with Petplan and they have been brilliant. We claimed LOU for Honey and they paid out in full including a trip to the Animal Health trust.
