Insurers won't pay third party

Thats my exact point if you read what I put third party would pay and public liability would not!! That is the subtle difference between the two!!!

There is no difference between the two popsdosh.

Please point to me any insurance policy document or website where you are obtaining your information that they differ.

If you are legally liable then both public liability and third party liability will pay out. If you are not legally liable, neither will pay out. The legal liability does not, and cannot, differ depending on a word written on an insurance policy.

The public is the third party, the two terms are interchangeable.

For those who are still confused, here's what it means:

First party - the person paying for the insurance

Second party - the insurance company

Third party - any person (member of the public) or organisation making a claim against you.

You can, like the OP, be morally responsible for an accident, but legally not responsible at all. And in that case, no insurance will pay out, and if you feel bad about it you will need to find the money to fix the problem yourself.

I had thought the point of 3rd party was to cover me if my horse hurt or damaged property. I was thinking specifically of the horse getting out of a field or loose at a show. Your post is more interesting as I have just received my NFU renewal and the cover has changed. I was going to call them to clarify as it doesn't see to cover accidental damage now. One horse is in work etc and the other is a retired expensive field ornament who only moves between her stable and field.

That is exactly what I had assumed my insurance was for. FYI. I left NFU a few years ago as they hiked the premium so much and when challenged
admitted they no longer wanted to insure horses.

They dont because they lost a packet at it ! And a great relief to me as it was dragging down their whole insurance business with it.
