I'm budgeting insurance for a horse I'm hoping to buy. 10-year-old cob with no health complications I'm aware of. For next year or so just hacking. Looking for vet fee cover.

Don't need personal liability as covered with BHS membership, or tack theft as covered with home insurance.

How much would I be looking to pay? I'm with Petplan for my dog and family members have used for their horses and they've been good, so they would be a contender if reasonable. Just looking at getting an idea of prices at this stage.

Depends on the level of cover you want and how reputable a company.

For approx £25-30pcm you can get catastrophe cover with KBIS (reputable but limited coverage) or full cover with The Insurance Emporium (formerly E&L, historically poor rep, you would need a credit card back up plan and know how to play the insurance game so they can’t wriggle out of anything).

But if you are wanting comprehensive cover with one of the bigger reputable firms then you are probably looking at £50 pcm +

Just one thing to add, some insurers for example NFU offer a very comprehensive package of activities with no option to personalise. Others allow you to tick exactly what you want to do. If you are only hacking, one of the companies that does the latter may work out more cost effective.

I have catastrophe insurance inc colic surgery with Shearwater with death, theft and straying included. It's 325 a year but only covers accidents and injuries.

I am changing from NFU this week to Harry Hall. I have made the decision not to put ponies through colic surgery one for is purely for age and one would not cope with with box rest. Cutting my insurance costs in half.

Thanks so much for your responses. Really useful. Dummy quote for Petplan was 35 per month which seemed very reasonable. Fairly large excess but ok with that. Would need to reassess next year when looking to do more than hack. Fingers crossed for vetting!

Good point, I'm also considering catastrophe cover. Will reassess after vetting.
