Insuring an older horse

Each is different - In My Experiance petplan and KBIS seem to offer the best policys for Veterans but you can get 3rd party cover for ever I think

As above. Full cover for accidents illness and disease till they are 25 with petplan if insured before 25th birthday. Then they and other companies do an accident only policy almost indefinitely.3rd party is not affected by age.

Not sure this is quite right, CoOnnie is with petplan - has been for 2 years now, but she is only covered for injury and not illness - ie she was not covered for her concussive laminitis, but would have been had she broken her pedal bond - she was insured on her 18th birthday - I believe if you have been with them for a long number of years before they're 16 they do fuller cover (or at least that's what happened with Betty my old mare who was with them for about 12 years)

Think it depends on the company. I am with Amtrust Equine who will insure my boy fully (bara his exclusions) until he is 20. IIRC Petplan told me they would insure him up to 25yo if I insured with them when he was 19.

TBH mine has so many exclusions now that I probably won't insure him for anything other than emergencies/accidents when my new (about to renew) policy runs out next year. He's 16.5yo and I would be v unlikely to put him through any major veterinary procedures now, given he already has spavins and ringbone.

I recently got a quote from Petplan for my 18 year old and it did include illness and injury but only £1000 it is a new veteran policy they have launched for over 17's- it is however much more expensive than KBIS who do a % per occurance rather than an excess. but 100% for colic - I would speak to petplan if I was you !

Try E&L... My 18 year old Eventer is insured with them at a good price

Yes, but have you ever had to get them to pay a claim out? Good luck if you ever do!

IME Petplan are by far the best insurers. They have been superb with both of my horses (in fact anyone who gets Central Horse News and has the July issue will see an article about my horse next to the Petplan advert!). My old boy has been insured with them for years - he is now 21 and is insured with them until he is 25.
I bought my mare in April last year and I am on my third claim with them already...yes they have queried things, but they have never attempted to refuse or delay a claim.

I have both my boys insured with petplan, one is 17 nearing 18 and the other is 21......both fully insured for illness and injury for up to £5000 per incident. They're only fully covered until 25yo but then I'll cover for accident and public liability and save a little each month in case anything should happen illness wise to either of them.

IME petplan are by far the best and have paid out without a problem. If they are insured before they are 19 then they continue on normal injury and illness cover until they reach 25. They still paid out for pedal bone rotation due to laminitis for my 30 year old. I believe alot is what is written by your vets on the claim form.

Would NEVER touch E&L - Ever
