Just had my renewal from NFU for my 2 horses insurance and trying to save costs I was wondering if it was worth carrying on insuring my 28 yr old pony??? Currently hes insured for minimal loss (but when he goes hes not being replaced so do I really need that?) and due to his age he is only insured for vets bill in the event of accident (not illness) and again given his age if we were no longer insured for this we would have to way up paying for treatment ourselves against letting him go.
Does anyone not insure their old horses or if they do what for and for how much???

I only insure my cob, not little girls older pony. We also insure through NFU, and our house insurance is through them too. With NFU (and I think they are one of the few this applies to) horses & ponies are regarded as pets. Therefore the are covered for public liability through the house insurance. For example if our pony got out on the road and caused an accident, or if it kicked someone at a show then we would be covered through the house insurance. We don't bother insuring her for injury/vets for herself as she is older and not really worth much so we take the risk, and would just have to pay vets bills, but in this day and age I feel happier knowing she is covered for public liability as everyone seems to want to sue everyone for something!

You should keep him insured for public liability reasons. They may get out or be let out of their field and you dont want to risk that. NFU insist on a minimum value which covers PTS and disposal if they have an accident. Mine are covered for PTS due to injury and public liability. Personally I dont bother about vet cover for anything else because they are not particularly accident prone. I also think vet cover is a rip off!

My old mare was insured with NFU. We've now transferred to PetPlan as it was cheaper so it might be worth a try? She's 35 and she's insured for a reasonable amount of stuff, although vet's bills are limited to (I think) £1,000.

Thanks for the replies. I shall ring NFU on monday and ask about options, especially re the house insurance and pets being covered bit! Also will get a quote from petplan and others too. Must say I am happy with the NFU but in these cost cutting times all options have to be considered!
