Hi,

You may remember me asking this a little while ago, but I still haven't had any luck!
I need to insure my tack ONLY!! The owner of my horse (I have on loan) is insuring her for vet fees etc, but my tack is not covered. I cannot include it on house insurance as it is not stored at home.
Can ANYONE help? I've contacted a few of the big horse insurance companies, but they can't help!

Be careful when you insure tack, read the small print as you may well find that your saddle is not covered! Tack normally, for some reason, does not include saddles, you have to have your saddle added to the policy............seriously!

why can't you pay the extra money to the person who owns your horse and get her to include it on the policy ?

TBH, many of these horse insurance companies get very picky about what they payout if your tack gets stolen. I had a bad experience when I tried to claim, they wanted me to produce a receipt for every item that had been stolen, which of course I could not do.

I would say try the NFU. If they wont do a seperate insurance they are excellent as house & contents insurers. Just be sure to specify saddle.

Check with you house insurance - they should be able to cover specified items (up to a certain limit) away from home. If yours won't then shop around for a house insurance company who will! That'll be your best bet.

Just a quick note to those of you covered on NFU through house insurance, check all your small print. When I took out house insurance with them I stated that I wanted to cover my husbands golf clubs and my daughters tack as specific items under extended contents. They said no problem but no need to cover the tack separately as it was automatically covered under their standard house contents even when away from home.
Great I thought ! In a rush one evening picked up my daughter from the yard and forgot saddle (the old one - we'd just bought a new one safely tucked up at home) - next morning call from the YO they'd been broken into and tack had all gone. Phoned NFU and the response was it was not covered whilst on the premises of a riding establishment, if I'd left it in field after a funride they would have paid but because we had left it at the yard in a locked tackroom it wasn't !
I have learnt my lesson regarding reading small print, and just thank god it wasn't the new saddle.

Also, beware of which locks they require you to have on the tack room door. I had trouble once as it wasnt a 5 lever bolt (or something). Despite the fact the owners live on site, the tackroom was alarmed, the door had 3 insurance standard padlocks on and the YO & dogs were running across the yard as the break in was occuring......the theives ran down a guard dog...............STILL my insrance company didnt want to pay out!!!

I had to get a report from the police to say that adequate measures had been taken to secure the tack!!

Afterwards they said that they wouldnt include my tack on my policy unless they had proof of the 5 lever mortice locks on the tack room!!!

Your house insurance company should be able to provide cover for Personal belongings away from home (it usually has to be specified individually). It is better cover than on a horse policy and works out much cheaper too.

I would have thought you could insure on your contents policy. Otherewise why not ask owner to insure it and you pay that element of premium.
