Insuring the in foal mare

Heya all - is it poss to insure your mare for being in foal? Assume you can’t get the foal covered at all?

Just looking at insurance renewal and Animal Friends won’t do anything for her.

When I bred from my mare she was already on a leisure horse policy with KBIS and they covered her for her pregnancy and foaling. I think you can get specialist cover for the foal before it's born but you'd need to go through a broker probably and I would expect it to be expensive.
I managed to get a policy when mine was born to cover her from 14 days of age, I went through a broker as most only start from 30 days old.

The bigger names usually cover foaling complications for the mare on a standard policy.
The foal is a completely different matter though, separate insurance needed, a lot exclude the first 14 days (the big risk period) and even after that the premiums are disproportionately high

for planning ahead purposes... for foal's policy i had to send the IgG result to the insurers and a vetting certificate - it would have been helpful to know the vetting requirements beforehand as they were specific, although I had a "well foal check" on day 1 when vet came to IgG he just noted that everything was hunky dory and we had to sort the paperwork out afterwards which was a faff. If I'd known i would have asked insurers their requirements before vet came (was still in post birth delirium i think!)

Spoke to NFU today. They said they'll only insure my foal once he's 30 days old. They seemed very surprised that the vet who did the PPE didn't catch the pregnancy (she can take a number) and want to see the 2-stage vetting report.

i wish I had seen this before now! Percy has had his well foal check and IGG at the stud. All was well, I hope there is paperwork so I can insure him!

My vet managed to cobble together a letter for me that included everything, as he had checked her from head to toe (paranoid first timer, much?!) but there was a bit of back and forth to confirm we'd addressed all their criteria which wouldn't have been necessary if I'd have known about it ahead of time.
