Just got my renewal quote through the post for my 16 year old :eek:

I want to keep insuring but it just keeps on going up and up year on year despite only having claimed once in eight years....which I know is due to age, cost of living blah blah!

Which insurance company is best for insuring the older horse, I'm currently with petplan and I've been really pleased with their service but wondered if there is a company who specialise in the oldies?

It's not so much of a concern now but hate to think what I will be paying in 10 years!

I'm with E&L but will be changing within the next couple of months as their older horse policy more or less only covers for cuts/grazes/wounds, they won't insure for anything else

This policy is now much cheaper but I don't think it's beneficial for me to have!

Insurance for the older horse gets increasingly problematic. You may find there comes a point that the exclusions are such that you can get better cover through the BHS gold membership.

For our veterans I drop vets fees and replacement value; retaining only third party liability (because it only costs about £2 on the premium) and disposal.

E&L do tend to be the cheapest - but do search the forum for the expereinces of those insured with them. Personally we're with SEIB because they do a good multi product deal - but NFU have a really good reputation too.

Im with NFU and my 16 year old is £15 a month on the vetran plan which covers £3k of vet bills, my dad holds the policy because he has several policies with them and gets a multiple policy discount but it isn't that much. My other one is with NFU too and is £50 a month but we have had two claims off them in the past.
We've never had any issues claiming off them either.

I was with NFU but changed to Petplan a year or two ago as Petplan seemed to have more thorough cover for older horses for longer. My horse is 17. Currently having to claim off them for lameness. Mine's about £37 a month for vets fees up to £5000. I insure her for all categories of use but only insure her for under a £1000.

My 22 year old is still insured for everything with KBIS.

There is an excess of £150, the limit per incident is £1,250 of which they only pay 75%.

I was just thinking of cancelling. £300 a year and all they would pay out is £775.

Dosn't seem worth it to be honest.

I am sure petplan will continue with vets fees untill they are 20, then they will give you accidental injury untill they are 25. What happens after that I do not know, my mare is 23 and has accidental injury with them. I have been with them forever, so not sure if all the above would apply to new customers.

Petplan will continue with full vets cover until the age of 25 provided you take out cover before their 20th birthday. After the 25th birthday they will insure the horse on their veteran plan which covers for injuries only.

Petplan is the best for older horses. My mare is 22 and covered with them. As long as you insure before the horse is 20 they will cover for illness until the horse is 25. My mare is 22 and last year they paid out nearly £10,000 for surgery on a very old chip fracture and treatment of hock spavins. They are currently paying for liver disease. My horse constantly has got a list of exclusions as long as your arm but she is also very imaginative in thinking up new ones so I find £400 a year for insurance excellent value for money - it has more than paid for itself over the years, sadly.

I'm with KBIS on the same plan as you rockysmum, and it is worth it! Bailey had choke in March and I paid 350 of a 900 vets bill, would have been pooped without insurance!!

Similarly Bailey's just had colic and I'm paying 240 of a 600 bill, thank god for insurance :) they're quick + easy to deal with too which is a plus!!

I have my 23yr old insured with Carriagehouse. They were great when I had to make a claim. I therefore also have my 5yr old with them. I also recommended them to a friend, who saved a small fortune by transferring to them.
