We have a new terrier, a recent addition to the gang, and Im wondering if I might get him insured. Ive never insured any of our dogs, have always put a little money aside monthly, and touch wood so far that has always worked well. However, with this rogue I think we will insure him, and wondered your recommendations please?

I am tesco for both of mine, Westie and border terrier. Good place to ask is your vets they will tell you the ones to steer clear of.

Often vets arent allowed to give recommendations about insurance companies, unless they are affiliated and work alongside a particular one. But I work for a veterinary practice and petplan are one of the best, they are a bit more pricey but they do have a good reputation and will pay your vets bill direct to the practice often rather than you having to pay the vets first and then waiting for the insurance company to reimburse you. Also direct line are very good from personal experience, and tesco seem to be good too.

The most important thing is whichever company you choose to go with make sure you get a lifetime policy rather than a time limited one. This is so important as if your pet ever develops a condition it will have for the rest of its life eg diabetes the insurance company will pay for the treatment costs for the illness for their whole life. Whereas a time limited one will pay all costs for the first year after diagnosis but nothing after that, so you will then have to pay for all costs for that illness for the rest of the pets life.

Hope this helps!

I also work in a vets and would agree with everything That Tedley has said. Petplan are without a doubt one of the better ones. It's worth remembering that the cheaper policies are often cheaper for a reason. Be sure to read the policies and know exactly what you are getting, if in doubt ring them.

Since working in a vets, I have totally understood the importance of insurance. The bills get so expensive, quite quickly....I'm talking thousands. I always think how thankful people must be to have insurance and there are always those who regret not having it!!

Another important reason to insure is for the public liability too.

If you just want public liability cover, and this is not included on your home insurance, it is worth joining Dogs Trust as this will give PL cover for all your dogs.

I have my JRTs insured with More Than, they have been excellent paid out for numerous operations(2 x eyes, cruciate ligament repair etc) and treatment quickly with no problems at all. The only thing is the excess is a % of the bill so with a big bill you have more to pay.
