My school is looking to start up a horse-riding team and I have been given the job of research

Who does the inter school competitions? How do they work? Do you use your own horse?

Please help

My 6th form have just started looking into some comps. So far we've only got an ODE and the hickstead schools SJ penciled in!

This website provided us with a few dates: http://www.nsea.co.uk/?page_id=11

I think we're planning to do the ODE at popular park in march - http://www.horsedates.co.uk/Schedules/3564.doc

Then I know one of the private schools in our area held a schools dressage comp at manor farm, Huntington, last year but not sure if they are doing that again.

All those comps are with your own horse, although I know Sissons Farm in Cambs (sorry not sure where abouts in essex you are re: distance!) ran a very novice interschools SJ not long ago where I think some people borrowed horses. Norton Heath also have interschools thing on from time to time but Im yet to find out who runs those!!

Sorry, not much help!!

I organise our school (local non-selective secondary) riding team and we are aiming to do some local stuff first, as quite a few venues offer team competitions. We also field individuals in unaffiliated competitions and use our school initials as the horses prefix so NBC White Silver if Finn gets used.

Our aim is to do some NSEA events later in the year but I think the height might be too much for us! I still think we are viable though and so does our head who has been really supportive. There is no budget though and we have had to raise competition fees and travel costs ourselves or rely heavily on parents and the generosity of my OH (twisted his arm

)

OH provides training free of charge and I co-ordinate training and competitions inside school time but carry out duties at weekends and holidays.

Trying to link up to other schools in the area but it's quite hard as not many state schools in this area offer anything.

Be interested to know how you get on.

National Schools XC is held at Primerose hill farm, in Gawcott, Buckinghamshire. I think it's held at Easter. I've done it a few years ago as it's very local to me. I found it hard to get any information on it though. It was all organised for us by the team manager. We didn't get any help from school, it was a parent of a friend who organised everything. We had to pay for everything ourselves, we didn't even get some matching shirts!! x

A bit off the point, but I did the Inter Scools & Pony Club SJ @ Hickstead for 3 consecutive years, and it was mega! Such an inspiring thing for a young rider to compete at that venue and stay over night with your horse. Great fun! Good luck organising it

Ah, interschools - Thistle and my second favourite topic, after we have finished with Pony Club!

Worried1 -I started up a team at my daughter's school, and we have done lots of the NSEA stuff. They ran a smaller class last year for novices - just checking that you knew about it.

My friend's daughter is at a non-selective comprehensive in Harpenden and their PE teacher supports the school equestrian team, so there are a few more out there.

The NSEA is dominated by the private schools, and I found them quite unhelpful to start with, but I persevered. The title national is a little ambitious IMO - more like south and midlands at the moment! Still it's a great idea and we've done it for the last 3 years.

If anyone wants more info, do pm me. Happy to help
