Hi

i am currently looking for the right stallion for one of my mares. Having looked at literally hundreds I finally found one that fits what Im looking for…but he shares one grandparent with my mare… is this acceptable or is this a big no no

my mare has a few famous lines so its actually tough to find horses she isnt related to unless you go to less well known lines which are less commercially viable

I would be fine with that, so long as it’s doubling up traits I really like and want.
Sometimes you see the same name appear on both sides and just know it’s concentrating the crazy o_O

The principle of Line-breeding is that we have the dam's great grandsire as the same horse as the grandsire of the stallion or - though less desirable, that it moves forward a generation so that the stallion's sire is also the grandsire of the mare.

The trick is to find the line to the stallion of your choice, that you want. There are stallions aplenty that have produced winning stock but very few which are suitable subjects for line breeding. When we see a stallion in a pedigree and we see his presence repeated, it's an idea to see exactly where he sits …. There are also stallions aplenty which have produced winning stock, but the real influence off course, came from the dam's side, but with the sire grabbing the credit!
