I have just had a very interesting conversation with the Laminitis Trust about preventative measures to take for my native. There is such conflicting advice out there about what is right and wrong...so I thought I would ask the experts.
My questions was is it better for prevention to put a horse on longer grass that has been growing a while or sparser closely grazed grass that is growing...and the answer was very much the short grass where they have to nibble and pick as it grows.
Now this is interesting because I have always thought this the worst type because it is actively growing and that is all they have access to when it is young and rich as it grows...what are your thoughts?
I currently have my boy on his winter field that was completely eaten down and he just picks at the bits as they grow with hay available too.

I had the same advice from the Laminitis trust and my vet.

It's true that the very short grass is not good for them but they just eat so much more if given access to longer grass.

I have followed their advice and it has worked well for mine.

I too had conflicting advice on dealing with a lamanitc pony last year, from Vets etc so went to the lami trust,
Who I have to say where excellent.
I have followed their advice ever since and found all the tips and advice most helpful.
For anyone with any queries on laminitus I couldnt recomend them enough!!!

I am glad of that bit of news, my mare is in a small paddock thats gone very green with this rain, up to now its been a dust bowl. The alternative was a field which would be strip grazed but the grass is long, so maybe she is better left where she is.
