Interesting backing debate inspired by another thread...

Very interesting thread. I had never considered using a dummy before, and have been lucky enough to be light enough to back little ponies myself when I used to work at a dealers yard. IMO I'd rather spend the time making sure the horse was ready for the rider, and not NEED a dummy, but then I can see the logic if, as some have mentioned, you have something really messed up already and it's the safest option. In this instance, tied down must surely be most useful, otherwise horse is still learning to remove it's passenger (i refuse to call a dummy a rider! :) )
