I always think that this thing about "ancient wisdom and empathy with animals" is a lot of hooey. Animals were (still are in lots of places) just looked upon as useful tools and their feelings weren't considered.

You should look up a paper called the pristine myth. It talks about how ancient and/or native populations are seen as being at one with nature but actually most of them over exploited as much as modern populations.

Yes, true - and the fall of many civilisations and societies is attributed to habitat destruction, amongst other defaults.
