I have a cushingoid horse who takes medication. My OH is a pharmacist. I work in a vets. Since horse started taking medication , my OH has managed to get it for me.
Today I needed more, and for the first time ever it is now cheaper to buy prascend than the
human version. At cost price, prascend is now 22p cheaper per tablet.
Thought useful info for all those who think they are being ripped off by not being able to get the human version.

I have noticed that, however I would speculate that the human one has become more expensive because they aren't selling as much of it - since it's now packaged as prascend and rarely used in human medicine anymore.

I am paying £1.50 per tablet and my horse is currently on 2.5 tablets a day :(

So that's £3.75 a day :o

Vets just today offered to do £1.06 a tablet to compete with the online price I found......

oberon i feel your pain as mine is also on 2 1/2 a day, i have got mine from viovet for 97p per tablet but have to pay £12.50 to the vet for a prescription so your vets offer sounds pretty good....mine also has danilon daily so meds are costing me over £100 monthly!!!!!!!!! i NEED to win the lottery very soon!!!

I feel a bit better knowing you have it worse than I :D

I'm just grateful the universe made it that his need for meds co-incided with me having a better paying job where I have unlimited overtime....:o

With my old job, I wouldn't have been able to cope :(

unfortunately i am on a pension so dont have the chance of unlimited overtime...i do have a part time job to help me pay for my horse and this was ok till she was diagnosed with cushings so my credit card is a little overused now. still she is happy and so i will carry on and hope that she doesnt have to increase the tablets...

Just paid 93p/ tablet for 1mg Prascend. Was 88p/ tablet back in July from same company.
So much for it getting cheaper as time goes on :(
Still suppose I can't complain really after seeing some of the prices quoted here :O

Hey

The reason pergolide prices have increased is because they are not using it as much in human medication anymore. Prascend unfortunatelty will not come down in price for a few years yet. Think it something to do with other equine drugs companies cant bring out competitive priced alternatives until prascend patent runs out? But dont quote me on that!!

I am just about certain that if any more of mine should rquire the equivalent of Pergolide, after my last affair with the whole Cushing's and laminitis thing I will simply pts and bury staight away.

The cost merely adds insult to injury, and the time bought by the administration (and that wasn't easy) of all the associated supplements and necessary procedures almost doesn't offset the extra time with said animal that they buy.

Ha, in effect, you pay twice!

:(

I hear you on that

.

I've been trying to get Obi's ACTH level under control all year. We are now at 172 and I worry about what the autumn brings :(

After two months on the Prascend and when his level went from the initial 200 to 500 - I thought about making that call.

I felt like I was just waiting for him to crash out with lami eventually.

I felt like it was inevitable that he would be in agony one day and there is nothing I can do to stop it.

I thought it was better to just end it now and spare him that future pain.

But then I stopped looking at his blood results and started looking at him.

And he is happy. Really happy.

So while he is happy - I will pay for the Prascend, herbs, minerals and anything else he needs.

There are only two days I am not working until the end of the month thanks to the overtime .

But while he is happy - I'll do anything I can to keep him so.

oberon, i feel the same as you about mine, her level has gone down to 52(still too high but was originally 172) and my vet is very happy with the way she is looking and behaving so we are staying at 2 1/2 until spring. she is very happy and i will keep her in the same way as i did before, out 24/7 in summer and in at night for winter with soaked hay.......i think quality of life is of utmost importance and she would be unhappy shut in a stable. if she gets laminitis or is otherwise uncomfortable/unhappy i will pts but not before...

splashgirl45 i am the same as you with the meds and its costing a fortune £2 a day for me as on pracend and danillon so £60 a month for me but while my girlies is healthy and happy i am prepared to pay for it for her x
