I'm on the committee for my local show and I've been tasked with finding some more interesting showing classes.

I was thinking:
Best bay
Best foreign breed

So far, we have:
IN-HAND
Best conditioned youngster
Best kept horse or pony
Veterans (15+)
Best child handler
Coloured and unusual colours
Small breeds (under 13.2)
Best mane and tail
Best behaved youngster
Most handsome colt/gelding
Prettiest filly/mare

RIDDEN
Best turned out
Best lead rein
First ridden
Mountain moorland
Best Rider
Family pony
Riding club horse or pony

Veteran rider, Novice Rider, Novice Horse, Fancy Dress, Best Trot/Canter/Jump are always popular fun show classes over here :)

Nice :D I like the novice and veteran riders! We save the fancy dress for the fun shows at the end of the year ^^ also LOVE the best trot/canter/jump!

Veteran rider, Novice Rider, Novice Horse,
How do you limit it though, what is a novice/veteran, how to riders prove it? It's not like other shows/events where points and records dictate who show where, so what stops someone with 10 years experience calling them self a novice?

In our shows a veteran rider is 40+ and anyone could technically enter the novice class but a true novice would be identified by our judges

Oh this sounds fun! What about:
best matched pair (rider and horse/pony)
pony with the best six legs (horse and rider combined)
pony with the prettiest face
pony the judge would most like to take home
fancy dress is always a good one!
retrained racehorse?

I hope you get some fab ideas :)

Can you not just do it the same way? In Australia we determine a novice rider the same way we determine a novice horse, by what they've won previously.

We also have amateur classes, which are only open to non-professionals (i.e. if you have accepted money to exhibit someone else's horse, or your horse has been exbibited by a someone who is a professional, then you are not eligible). They are very well supported.

ETA - another for the re-trained racehorse!

If you do a class for one colour, you will take to do one for the rest I would think.

Horse/pony the judge would most like to take home was one class I did years ago. Walk/trot under saddle and then pony is handled by the judge.
Horse with film star quality was another.
Most unusual markings/features.

Hunter in hand and ridden?
Potential eventer - ridden, small show and some coloured & rustic fences
Ridden cob (show & trad)
Open in hand (loads of entries!!)
Young handler in hand

Ridden pairs is quite fun, don't have to match and you could give a special rosette to Mum and daughter or oldest combination?

Classes for local riders, within 5 miles of show ground?

Thelwell pony class is always a good one, not fancy dress as such but gets boys and their shaggy ponies to enter who might not otherwise.

Native Breeds
Best Hunter
Best Horse
Best Pony
Horse/Pony with a secret skill?
Handy Pony - could that count as showing? could be part of a best child's horse/pony class
ridden coloured
youngstock showing? mare and foal type thing?

Best rescue horse/horse loaned from the blue cross or similar? Would be interesting to hear some of the horses' stories.
'Diamond in the Rough' class?
