some of those responses are really silly - "Best way to pass a horse is quickly and quietly, less chance of spooking them! Unfortunately most people crawl past, which can really freak them out!"

thankfully the drivers around my area are mostly considerate

did you read the post on page 4 about riders riding on a cycling/footpath which is now physically impassable and forcing children onto the road because of the "walls of horse poo" and in one place they could not get around said "wall of poo" and had to turn back???

never laughed so much! What a story!! How big are the horses in their area?

I was really annoyed out hacking on tues. We were going down a one track country lane where at the bottom it opened out wide enough for two cars. We were almost at that part when some silly woman in a golf decided to put two wheels on the verge to go past us instead. She nearly drove up my gelding's a*se! Its a good thing he wasnt bothered but if he had spooked and sat on the car then who would have been responsible? The driver should have waited for us to be able to move over when the road widened out.

I have heard, but can't say whether it's right or not, that historically & in the highway code, that horses have right of way over motorised transport. Bit like in in sailing, sail has the right of way over steam (motor power). Not that I'm advocating arguing with an artic or anything. Just interested if any one else has been told this.

Some of those people are idiots!

Bad drivers are a huge bug bear of mine (along with riders that don't say thanks!). And you can tell straight away those that aren't horsey in that thread. It seems people with no horse sense think a horse has to be a complete robot to be allowed on the road. Riders wouldn't have to use the road if the countryside hadn't been teared up for cars!

People need to understand that horse's are animals and even the most 100% bombproof horse could potentially spook. Same of those people who's dogs attack children "he was such a calm lovely dog".

I used to work for an equine insurance company and in the rare times when we had an RTA and received police report it was always interesting reading the major differences in horse behaviour depicted by the rider and non-horsey motorists.

Similar thing happened to my friend when i was out with her. Her horse was a youngster and hadn't quite worked out what cars were. We were on a VERY quite road (not a main road at all) that was only just wide enough for a car to overtake. Idiot in a 4x4 decided he didn't need to slow down if he drove halfway on the verge. Horses friend freaked, he had to slam on his brakes and my friend yelled at him. Driver slowly overtook looking sheepish

FFS ;) I have given up reading - didn't make it as far as the poo piles!! I find the ignorance of some people astounding and very irritating.

Yes I accept that some riders are inconsiderate, but not all. But fine moan about the inconsiderate ones if you want. It's the comments that horses shouldn't be allowed on the roads that really get my goat

but these arent ''horsey'' people. Alot of them understand little and know even less.

The more and more townies moving out to remote and pretty villiages the more stupidly fast cars with idiotic drivers there are zooming along our nice quiet lanes with no regard for anything, including animals or other cars.

To me it highlights how different road users have little understanding of each others needs.

A bit like cyclists , if you aren't one you wont know what they need to travel in safety. They have issues with car drivers aswell.

road users should really have a basic knowledge of each other on the roads and it might be something the driving test should include. I don't remember anything about how to approach / deal with horses on the roads etc.

Since when do country folk own the roads, have I missed something here.

Times have changed and there is no place on our roads for horses. They are not a viable means of transport anymore and should be kept in fields where the ground is softer for them,if you want your fun on your horsey then go in the fields out of everyones way. Maybe if this happened, the need to nail pieces of iron to their feet could done away with as they wouldnt need to be walking on tarmac or concrete.

Another little gem :D

Well it depends if you want to be unnecessarily pedantic or not :p

In my opinion ''country folk' born and bred do have a much better idea of the roads and road etiquette.
I live on a quiet road, and it is used as a cut through to a big town. cars go too fast round blind bends and dont use their heads to think that ahead there may be someone on a horse, someone moving cattle across the road ect ect.
