Interesting video given recent debates. Horiffic fall at Boekelo.

I will gladly admit to this showing the enormous benefit, and I seriously would think that if money were no object then things may be different for us following this. So words are being eaten (with my sandwich, to make them more palatable ;) ).

I still want published data from the airbag companies simulating falls like this. Because I'm a geek who likes things like that- proof beyond the anecdote that they work. But this is a truly shocking video and it scares me that my sister will go XC and jump fences that could result in this fall!

It was seeing a fall like this from a distance of a few feet that convinced me, all those years ago, that before my daughter went XC again she should have an air bag. I note that now many of those who thought I was barking mad and/or an overprotective mother have equipped their children similarly.

But as I've always said, it's up to the individual to assess the information available and make their own mind up.

Hope Coral recovers swiftly.
 
I have read so many debates about P2's on HHO over the last few years, but I don't think I have commented before today.

I would go so far as to say that the posts on HHO have actually stopped me from allowing my daughter to have a P2 as the arguments on here have been so convincing. :(

But...after much, much consideration, and our own research and trials we decided to purchase one earlier this year. And yes, it was a lot of money, but we saved hard for it.

After seeing this video today, I am so glad she has one. And I wouldn't dream of telling anyone to get one / not to get one. But I would say - just explore the facts outside of HHO.
 
^^ me too Bubblegum. But having seen that video I think I will be happier riding with one then without. Im just so pleased that P2 allow yearly payments now.
 
A very good friend of mine was killed in a fall like this at Burghley into water , so in theory a softer landing ................that was before air jackets...............I have to say I think Coral would have been worse off without one , thank God she is OK .

Bit like anything really - HHO is hardly a representative sample of the horse world! (And thank god for that :eek:)

I ride in an exo for just that reason - they are loudly decried by a large number of people, including BE themselves, but it was video footage of a rotation fall much like that one, and the person being on their feet and running after the horse before the fence judge was anywhere near them which sealed the deal for me.
 
I have no problem with air jackets - I believe in free choice. But I feel uncomfortable with how quickly those videos go up and actually if it was 3 weeks later when both horse and rider are completely clear of any potential complications I would not have an issue. Having played rugby and had a friend die 3 days later from what was supposed to be a broken leg but ended with a blood clot which moved. I appreciate marketing is about making the most of an opportunity but when it is life and death I feel uncomfortable about that side of it.

I have always stayed out of the air jacket debate as I believe everyone should do as they please and make a decision based on what they feel is best for them. I hate having other peoples opinions rammed down my throat and to be honest I tend to just switch off......;)

My OH has been nagging me about getting an air jacket for a while now and I've always resisted saying I didn't need one as I didn't jump big fences - but you know what? you still fall off and hurt yourself don't you? So for that reason, and having watched this video I shall be putting one on my Christmas list.

Glad horse and rider are ok

It is quite clear from the still frame when she is on the floor and the horse is yet to land on her that from the thickness of the black layer across her chest (which you can see end-on at that point) that the jacket is up.

If you freeze it earlier, at the point where she is directly head down towards the floor, the distance between the trigger and the saddle attachment is already so great that the cord will have activated.
 
I'm not going to lie, as an Airjacket 'supporter' it does please me to hear people saying they are now considering purchasing one.
Like someone said before there is more information out there than just HHO.
Don't forget there is also the Hit Air as well as the Point 2.
BUT I do hope that there is still further research, testing & improvements done :)
 
When BE ban me from wearing my exo, as doubtless they will at some point, then I'll have an air jacket (hit air) as the next best thing. Until then, I will keep my roll cage!
 
The only reason that I haven't invested in one is the cost. I simply can't afford it. Since my OH saw the jacket on the jennfer saunders thing he has been bugging me to get one. Finding out on this thread that there is the opportunity to spread the cost may well be the incentive to get one.

I was thinking about her accident ( I did not know her, so not claiming any inside knowledge or relationship) when I was looking at the video and the same thought crossed my mind. Would she have survived if she had had an air jacket, which of course weren't around at that time.

Your point is valid, but with the speed the social media now moves, someone would have posted this anyway. Previously newspapers showed an enormous lack of respect by happily publishing photographs of people who were about to die. Thinking of years ago, when a friends father was killed at brands hatch when he he came out of his ( vintage) car. The Sunday express published photographs of him trying to crawl off the track and excitedly pointed out the car coming round which would hit and kill him. Tragic, tragic accident for a very lovely and very close family. In fact, the media didn't hold back and was giving out his name before all family members had been notified..
 
If my mare stays sound and we do some x-c I will hopefully get one but after the marketing campaign from one company I know which one ill be buying I work in sales and as such have always been taught to see products off your own merit not slagging others off!!

Yes even before the speed of social media the press were publishing insensitive pictures. When a relative of mine was killed in a climbing accident one of the papers published a picture which they said was his body in a body bag being stretchered off the mountain (it turned out it wasn't him but another climber killed that day). It was a horrible and very upsetting experience for our family and probably for the other family too and the press should have shown more sensitivity.

The use of videos like this so soon after accidents really shouldn't be encouraged it only adds to the distress of families. Obviously in this case it seems that Coral has been quoted so probably agreed to the use of the video, in which case I guess point 2 can't be critisised but had she not agreed or had she been more seriously injured I hope that they would have shown some sensitivity.
 
I bought an air jacket this year and i went to the shop with the same thought about advertising and really wanted a hit air. it just didn't fit me so i ended up with a P2. Please don't let principles get in the way of your safety
 
Whilst agreeing that without the air jacket the injuries would have been worse I can't help thinking they were premature in their claims that "no serious injurys occurred" - Coral has a partially deflated lung, in my book - that's serious!
 
A large pneumothorax (which is what I would think they are saying she has) can be pretty catastrophic if not treated quickly particularly if it occurs as a result of trauma. However once a chest tube is inserted (if required) they tend to resolve pretty quickly.
Death from a simple (not tension) pneumothorax is considered rare.
That said if this is a pneumothorax then her chances of it happening again spontaneously are increased.
 
I saw this on FB.. ! Its unbelievable but it does look like the jacket inflated at the earliest part of the fall. It’s amazing they are both not seriously injured (collapsed lung isn't exactly nothing!). I wish them all the best and a speedy recovery!

I was given a P2 to trial which was rather handy and when I had to return it I felt naked without it. I bought one straight away and I've always been pro them. I'm not necessarily pro P2 or Hit Air I think they both have their pros and if you can afford to buy one you should do because every little helps and what’s £400 if its prevents you from being crushed.

I hadn't heard that they are letting people pay over a 12 month period. I think that’s a great idea and will enable more and more people to get one. At the end of the day its a dangerous sport and we have to try and protect ourselves as best as we can.
 
great news about them allowing customers to pay over a certain amount of time, but can anyone post a link for where u can do this, or where it says they are allowing this?

I might just be being silly but I can't see any options for this on their website, or even a statement saying its possible!

Help!! I really want to get one but it is impossible financially unless I could do it this way :)

I remember seeing this on Facebook from Point 2 about paying monthly - probably best to call or email and ask for details!!

It makes me squirm a bit as you can see by the way the horses back moves just how much of its fall is broken my the rider :o

Hope they both continue to recover, bet they are both still feeling it

I suspect that had she been very badly injured or worse, P2 would have been very quiet indeed! ;)
 
Awful fall. Poor Coral and her horse. Hope she is well on the way to being fully mended, and the horse isn't too stiff and sore.
Glad her P2 seems to have done a very good job in saving her from very serious further injury. (how is her face not squashed?) I personally can't afford one, so I'm ruled out of getting one, not that I compete much these days.
Just have to say, that I admire the horse who appeared to be ever so careful when he got up not to stand on her in panic.
