Does anybody have personal experience of any of the shipping companies available? I ran a google search but there are so many its impossible to know where to start.

I'm looking for a company that will export from Europe to South Africa, or possibly from Argentina to South Africa. I have no idea which companies are reputable, which are good value etc etc..so any help would be appreciated.

I recently looked into exporting a horse from SA to Europe. It's not at all common a route and so very few do it. I was quoted a price of $10-15k. Given the huge quarantine costs it was not viable for me to do it. As you are exporting the other way it may be different however, the shipping costs are likely to be the same.

Ok, I'll look into john parker. Thank you!

Claud, yes..it is a very uncommon route, which proves it to be difficult. Just out of curiosity - what kind of horse were you wanting to import?
Generally, the quality of warmbloods and such here is lower, hence why a lot of people import. I'm still deciding whether to buy here or not, and if I do, whether I can get quality that matches overseas. I've found a few, but there's just not so much choice.

I figured 10k would be about right..150 000 rand. It really is quite ridiculous

And yes, quarantine costs would be less going the other way. Quarantine for SA horses being exported is so much because of the AHS and so on, coming from europe it is much more simple.

I was looking to import a horse that's been doing endurance but I think would make a fabulous eventer. He's a strong brave chap with a big jump and an incredibly quick learner. A similar horse here would cost a lot more so I thought - even given the high transport costs - it would be worth it. However, given the cost of the quarantine as well, it's just not pratical. Hope you have better luck.

Im moving out to South Africa in the new year ( my oh is already moved over there) Im looking at taking my horse with me!
Ive been looking at transport and didnt know where to start!
I wonder if we moved two together whether we'd get a better deal!

AddyKan

The cost I was quoted from SA to Europe (i.e. the $10-15k) was for a crate with 3 horses. You basically have to wait until they have enough to fill the crate. They will also ask you whether your horse is a mare/gelding/stallion. Obviously, they can't just mix and match the sexes. If you were just to ship your horse alone it would obviously be much more than $10+k.

Well, I know a few people who have imported warmbloods and they've normally brought a few over at the time, I think it is cheaper..where are you wanting to move yours from and to AddyKan? As in, whereabouts in SA etc? hehe I know its Europe to South Africa..
Hmm..I'm going to have to do some serious looking into this. Decide whether its worth bringing over a horse or just doing a proper scouring of the warmblood studs here for a talented one.

Reminds me..if you want to know anything about the country or horse-wise just give me a PM, i'll be glad to help

Really is a lovely country here..just be careful when you first ship over about the AHS

John Parker was great for us did all the paperwork for bring our stallion over from Holland. Would use again for any shipping that we have to do.

Do John Parker allow you to choose a vet? I've just heard horror stories..apparently south africans are targeted when they go overseas and they're sold rubbish horses for a lot of money, and often unsound ones. But I would just insist I had a vet I was happy with do the vetting and everything.

Hehehe yeah I know its very daunting

You're welcome to PM
