I've seen this film loads of times and kind of love it and kind of hate it. Is it just me or does it leave anyone else feeling a bit of a failure? Girl gets a foal and gets picked for the Olympics, I get a new horse and I'm sure its as 'not really 100% sound' as the last one. It reminds me of the delusional dreams I've had since I was a kid and that I'm no closer to them at all. Pointless post really, full of self pity. Have fun telling me to get a grip, its just a film!

It is just a film but it's great - not as good as National Velvet though! As a child I dreamt of having my own horse and calling it 'The Pie'. Still watch it whenever it's on telly.

But then again, all the bint on International Velve did was jump a few jumps in a field and she got selected for the British team

and then she hugely stuffed up at the Olympics (but still got gold somehow!). I wouldn't feel too bad about it

I love it - and get a little bit weepy at the end  Although if only it was as easy as she had it - never go to a comp, do a bit of fittening work, say 'I am going to be picked for the british team'... and then get picked and win olympic gold

Oh it's a terrible film! And I STILL cry every single time I see it!. As for national vvlvet - I adore the book. It's one of my all time favourites and as a consequence I LOATHE the film because it it nothing like the book!

I love it, I cry every time I see it, the bit that gets me every time is when they retire the Pie at HOYs - my dream as a little girl (and now to be honest) is to ride in the arena at HOYs - keep dreaming girl!!

Oh brill thanks!! Beth is the lady who helps Sarah out at the Olympics? She was a fellow team member I think? Was just wondering because have worked for Sarah Bullen and was never sure which person she was on that film!

I LOVE international velvet. Sure as I've got older i've started to pick faults in it - but that movie alone is responsible for inspiring me to go for what I want and ever since I was 9 i've wanted the same thing I still want and i'm damn well gonna get there.
(Yes that suggests I have no life that a film inspired my lifetime goal lol)

a few smal things; The Pie is the cleverest horse ever. in the book he is piebald (hence the name) he becomes chestnut in the film national velvet and has turned bay in retirement in international velvet which was just as well because jane holderness roddam and warrior doubled for them in international velvet. beth was another team member. one of the other british team members was taught to ride sufficiently to do close ups at south london school of equitation in streatham, south london (he might be called Mike in the movie?) and personally i think it is a rubbish film!

It was on twice yesterday on TCM. They don't seem to have that may films though so it will probably repeated again soon. Thanks everyone for all the replies!

The Pie was even more clever than that!!!! In National Velvet he was a gelding - but he regrew his manhood in International Velvet where Arizona Pie was his last foal before he retired from stud duties

I love it and it always makes me cry at the end.

The only thing that gets me is that she is picked for the olympics to event after seemingly competing at village gymkana level show jumping.!!!!!

Not even a county show!!

Still it is Hollywood after all.

It's a feel good film and I've seen it that many times I know what's coming up and the words

The end on the beach still makes me cry though however many times I've seen it
